    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a GI (graded index) type optical waveguide which can be easily manufactured without decreasing the processing property of a polymer itself and without requiring complicated mechanical control, and to provide a method of easily manufacturing a GI optical waveguide without depending on the size in area or volume of the waveguide. SOLUTION: An optical waveguide is formed to 100 nm to 1 mm depth from the surface of a resin molded product having any desired width and length by permeating and/or dispersing a sublimating or volatile organic compound having a lower refractive index than that of the resin so that changes in the refractive index in the optical waveguide part are induced to obtain 0.4 to 20 ΔN defined by expression (1), wherein n 1 is the refractive index of the resin without permeation and n 2 is the refractive index in the resin with permeation of the above compound. • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmission medium with a switching function, and to provide a manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION: The optical transmission medium is constituted of a core and a clad and propagates the light through the core, and is characterized in that a photoisomerized coloring-matter varying in the refractive index by irradiation with light is osmotically dispersed into the clad; and the manufacturing method therefor is characterized in that the photoisomerized coloring matter having affinity with the resin of a resin molding constituting the optical transmission medium and sublimation property or volatility, and the resin molding are placed in a predetermined space, and then the photoisomerized coloring-matter is sublimated or evaporated in the space to be a saturation state and is made to uniformly adhere to the surface of the resin molding, and the adhering photoisomerized coloring-matter is osmotically dispersed into the resin molding from the surface. • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical buffer memory device which accumulates a string of optical pulse signals without applying electric conversion thereto and which is used at normal temperature, and also to provide an optical signal recording method to realize the optical buffer memory device. SOLUTION: The optical buffer memory device has: a wavelength converter 1 to convert a pulsed signal light beam 5 with a specified wavelength into a pulsed conversion light beam 7 with a wavelength different from that of the signal light beam 5; and a record reproducing unit 2 to temporarily record information on the pulsed conversion light beam 7 wavelength-converted with the wavelength converter 1 on a writable and readable recording medium, and subsequently to take out the information as a pulsed signal light beam 10 with the specified wavelength. The wavelength converter 1 contains a light absorption layer film with a wavelength band absorbing the signal light beam 5 and transmitting a light beam 6 for conversion, and converts a wavelength by utilizing a thermal lens forming element using a thermal lens based on a refractive index distribution reversibly generated due to a temperature rise occurring in a region in which the light absorption layer film has absorbed the signal light beam and a peripheral region thereof.
