摘要： PURPOSE: To provide a pressure accumulation type fuel injection device which can jet properly the fuel from an injector even when a high pressure pump goes in failure. CONSTITUTION: A high pressure pump 7 pressurizes the fuel lifted from a fuel tank 8 by a low pressure pump 9 and feeds it by pressure to a common rail 4 via a supply pipe 6. At the common rail 4, the high pressure fuel supplied from the pump 7 is held at a specified high pressure level, and this high pressure fuel is injected into an engine 1 from its injection valve 2 wherein the injecting operation is controlled by a solenoid valve 3. The outlet from the low pressure pump 9 is connected with the common rail 4 via a detour 16, and on the way of this detour 16, a check valve 17 is installed which prevents the high pressure fuel from counterflowing toward the low pressure pump 9 from the common rail 4. Even when the high pressure pump 7 is in failure, it is possible to feed fuel to the common rail 4 from the low pressure pump 9, the engine can be operated continuously.

CONSTITUTION:An adjusting means 2 for main injection and a pilot injection means 3 are communicated with a plunger high pressure chamber 9 respectively in response to locomotion of a plunger 10. Consequently, while one of the means 2, 3 is actuated, that is, when it is communicated with the plunger high pressure chamber 9, the other is blocked, and the volume does not influence pressure of the high pressure chamber 9, and further fuel of the high pressure chamber 9 is increased or decreased sufficiently for a specified time so as to enable a proper control of fuel injection rate.

CONSTITUTION:The volume of a variable volume chamber communicated to a high pressure chamber formed between the tip surface of a rotationally and reciprocatively moving plunger and a cylinder bore is controlled by an electrostriction actuator 21 to control pilot injection, and energization of the electrostriction actuator 21 is controlled through the medium of a drive circuit 400 by means of a control circuit 200. In this device, the drive circuit 400 is formed with a charge circuit adapted to charge the actuator 21 from a DC source through an inductor 44, a switch element 41 and the like and a discharge circuit containing a switch element 42. A voltage varying negative source 47 serving as a varying means adapted to vary an interterminal voltage during discharge of the actuator 21.
