    • A constant velocity universal joint smoothly rotates under a high operating angle and large torque and reduces an excessive load applied to the cage. The universal joint includes an outer joint member having an inner spherical surface with multiple track grooves and an inner joint member having an outer spherical surface with multiple track grooves paired with the track grooves of the outer joint member. The universal joint also includes multiple balls interposed between the track grooves of the inner and outer joint members to transmit torque and a cage interposed between the outer joint member and the inner joint member to retain the balls. A tapered relief portion retracted with respect to the outer spherical surface is formed with low curvature at a back end portion of the outer spherical surface of the inner joint member to be smoothly continuous with the outer spherical surface.

    • Automatic installation of a circlip is facilitated even when an axial length (inner race width) of a protrusion of an inner race is reduced. An inner race is installed in a constant velocity universal joint for transmitting torque while allowing angular displacement between itself and an outer race, with a shaft being inserted in a shaft hole formed in an inner bore to be spline-fitted thereto so as to be prevented from coming off by virtue of the circlip. A two-step chamfer having different chamfer angles is provided at a shaft insertion side end portion of the shaft hole. The two-step chamfer includes a first chamfer section situated on a shaft hole opening side and a second chamfer section provided on the side opposite to the shaft hole opening so as to be continuous with the first chamfer section. The chamfer angle α of the first chamfer section is set larger than the chamfer angle β of the second chamfer section.

The fixed type constant velocity universal joint includes: an outer joint member including an inner surface (21) in which a plurality of track grooves (22) are formed; an inner joint member including an outer surface (24) in which a plurality of track grooves (25) are formed; a plurality of balls (27) interposed between the track grooves (22) of the outer joint member and the track grooves (25) of the inner joint member so as to transmit torque; and a cage (28), which has pockets (29) for housing the balls (27), and is interposed between the outer joint member and the inner joint member. When a maximum operating angle is formed, the balls (27) roll up to track-groove-opening-end portions (22a) of the outer joint member. Each of the track grooves (22) of the outer joint member is provided with a hardened layer (S1) formed so as to extend from a track-groove deep side to the track-groove-opening-end portion, the hardened layer (S1) having a smaller thickness at the track-groove-opening-end portion (22a) compared with a thickness at other portions.

    • A novel constant velocity universal joint with eight ball is provided for realizing the improved durability of the joint under high-loaded conditions and the suppressed variations of lifetimes of the joints. The universal joint has an outer joint member having eight curved track grooves axially extending along an inner circumferential surface with a spherical shape, an inner joint member having eight curved track grooves axially extending along an outer circumferential surface with a spherical shape, eight balls respectively arranged in eight ball tracks provided as pairs of the track grooves of the outer joint member and the track grooves of the inner joint member, and a cage having pockets for respectively holding the balls. The center of each track groove of the outer joint member is axially displaced a predetermined distance from the spherical center of the inner circumferential surface. The center of each track groove of the inner joint member is axially displaced the same distance from the spherical center of the outer circumferential surface in the direction opposite to that of the outer joint member. A PCD gap in the ball track is in the range of 5 μm to 50 μm.
