    • An article having an optical fiber integrally attached to a micro-device having spaced movable and nonmoving layers suitable for creating optical interference effects is disclosed. In one configuration, the micro-device is suitable for optical modulation, wherein the movable layer is electrostatically actuated to move towards the nonmoving layer. Such movement changes the size of the gap between the layers, resulting in a change in micro-device reflectivity. An optical signal is modulated by controlling micro-device reflectivity via a controlled voltage source. In a second configuration, the micro-device is suitable for measuring pressure. For pressure measurement, the movable membrane moves in response to pressure changes. The change in membrane position again results in a change in micro-device reflectivity. Reflectivity is correlatable to pressure. In a third configuration, the micro-device is suitable for measuring temperature. In the third configuration, the movable membrane is isolated from pressure effects by the addition of an evacuated cavity located beneath the membrane. The region between the movable and nonmoving layers is gas filled. Changes in gas pressure due to changes in gas temperature cause the movable layer to move, affecting micro-device reflectivity. Reflectivity is correlatable to temperature.

    • A multiple optical fiber connector is constructed from a unitary planar substrate having two surfaces with 1) multiple fiber holes and 2) plural alignment regions located in opposing relationship to each other along edges of the substrate, the multiple fiber holes and plural alignment regions being formed substantially perpendicular to and between the surfaces of the substrate using photolithographical techniques. Each optical fiber is permanently mounted through one of the holes in one surface of the substrate so that the end of each fiber is substantially flush with the other surface of the substrate. Alignment posts which are positioned against the alignment regions and mounted substantially perpendicular to the surfaces of the substrate are used to align optical fibers mounted in the substrate with optical fibers mounted in a substrate of a mating connector.

    • A modular gas services outlet unit for providing gas related services, such as compressed air, oxygen and vacuum, to a health care facility. The unit is enclosed within a shell which may be mounted on a surface or installed in a recess in a wall. Preferably, each of the gas service devices utilized in the unit is supported by a swivel connector assembly which allows the gas service device to be moved between an operating position in which the device extends a distance outside the shell and a storage position in which the device is contained entirely within the shell. In this way, when the gas service is not required the fully assembled gas service device can be rotated to the storage position inside the shell. In most instances the unit will include a cover which is slidably mounted over the shell for concealing the unit when none of the gas services are in use. When use of a gas service device is required, the cover is repositioned to permit access to the unit and the swivel connector allows the device to be moved immediately into the operating position with little or no assembly.
