摘要： There is provided a map display device and a navigation device for displaying a three-dimensional map in which information which is originally hidden can be displayed on a display frame (screen). The map display device (navigation device) includes a map storing unit for storing three-dimensional data of each map constituent, and a map display unit for forming a three-dimensional bird's-eye view map which is obtained by projecting onto the plane from a desired view point each map constituent which is specified by the three-dimensional data stored in the map storing unit, and displaying the three-dimensional bird's-eye view map thus formed on a display frame (screen). When information which is requested to be displayed by a user is hidden by another map constituent located in front of the information and thus is not originally displayed on the three-dimensional bird's-eye view map, the map display unit changes a projection mode for projecting the information or the other map constituent on the plane so that the information is displayed on the display frame.

SOLUTION: Route guidance is provided by a navigation device 231 which is not only usable as the on-vehicle type but also portable. The navigation device 231 has communications functions by itself or it is associated with a cellular phone so that the navigation device, using the communications functions, is connectable with a service center 10 who provides a plan of a trip through a network 50 such as the Internet, to sample the plan of the trip already registered in the center or to sample and display map information which indicates a route matching the plan of the trip. The navigation device 231 has a GPS antenna, a display portion, and a group of control keys and displays different areas of a map according to whether it is in a use mode in which it is carried around by the user or in an on-vehicle use mode. Route or facility guidance is provided according to the use mode.

SOLUTION: Map data of a building or the like existing in the periphery of the present position are read from a map database (step 501), and it is discriminated whether this map element is building data or not (step 502), and if it is a building, the three-dimensional shape of the map element is converted in building plotting processing in accordance with the distance from the viewpoint to the building, and plotting data are generated by projection conversion (step 505), and generated plotting data is stored in a RAM (step 506). After this processing is performed for all map elements, stored plotting data are rearranged in the order from data most distant from the viewpoint and are plotted over bird's-eye view map in the order of depth (steps 508 and 509).
