    • A novel bridge device and accompanying methodology which link the world of the smart cards to that of the magnetic finance cards is described. This bridge device is called the Magnetic Stripe Bridge (MSB), whose primary function is to interface an ordinary or naked smart card, with just a smart chip embedded in, to a magnetic card reader for credit transaction without requiring alteration of the existing card processing infrastructure. This is done using techniques which include magnetic stripe signal emulation. Thus, any smart card is effectively transformed via the use of the MSB into an ordinary magnetic finance card and is admissible for use by any conventional magnetic card reader. Through this MSB and the accompanying methodology, secure smart cards can now be deployed everywhere, including on the Internet, thus significantly reducing the current extensive magnetic finance card fraud and identity theft. In baseline and alternate preferred embodiments, the MSB is adapted for use with lateral, swipe type magnetic card readers. Via an advanced preferred embodiment, an improved AMSB is adapted to enable usage with both swipe-type readers, as well as with ATM-like terminals which require virtually full longitudinal insertion of the card being used.

    • One end of a leaf spring is connected to a plate so that the leaf spring is disposed generally parallel to the plate, permitting the resulting article to be clipped onto an edge of a thin object, such as a waistband. Two spaced parallel slots extend through the plate, permitting a band of material, such as a belt, to be attached to the plate by threading the band into one of the slots and out of the other slot. The resulting article permits carrying cases that are provided with belt loops, intended for a user's belt, to be clipped onto the waistband of a beltless user.

    • An improved fire detector is obtained by combining a conventional smoke particle sensor with a fire radicals odor sensor; the latter being an electronic nose tuned to respond to the presence of a family of radicals, produced by most fires, that is responsible for the odor associated with a fire. The conventional smoke particle sensor is prevented from producing an alarm signal unless the tuned electronic nose senses that the fire-produced radicals are increasing at a rate that exceeds a preset threshold rate. In another aspect of the invention, the smoke particle sensor is provided with a second, lower, threshold connected to a timer so that an alarm will be produced if the lower threshold is exceeded, without interruption, for a preset time. The improved fire detector, using the combined sensors, has greater sensitivity and a lower false alarm rate.

    • A retractable and extendable handle for a piece of luggage is provided at its distal end portion with a distal jaw, and spaced from that, a proximal jaw. These jaws facilitate loading the luggage into an overhead luggage compartment. The jaws may be integral parts of the handle, or they may be parts of an attachment that is affixed to an existing handle. With the handle fully extended, the distal jaw is brought up and over the lip of the floor of the overhead luggage compartment, and then with the proximal jaw pushing against the underside of the lip, the luggage is lifted to force the handle to retract into the luggage. Next, the luggage is pivoted upward about the tip of the distal jaw so that the proximal jaw clears the lip of the floor of the compartment. Thereafter, the luggage is pushed horizontally into the compartment.

    • An apparatus for measuring the concentration of a selected solute in a solution. This apparatus is particularly suitable for measuring the concentration of blood components, such as blood glucose. A beam of exposing light is imaged through a wall of a containment vessel onto a region of the sample adjacent to this wall to induce from said selected solute emission of light that includes at least one emission peak that can be used to calculate the concentration of this solute. At least one detector is positioned to maximize the strength of detected signal, if other components of this solution strongly absorb the emitted light. The exposing light is directed such that the detected signal is maximized as a function of the path of this exposing light. A particular embodiment is a non-invasive blood glucose tester that can be used painlessly by diabetics to monitor their blood glucose levels. In this embodiment, the containment vessel is preferably one of the patient's fingers. At least two additional detected signals are monitored and processed at wavenumbers suitable for eliminating temperature and pressure effects on the calculated blood glucose levels.

    • The proper operation of an NDIR toxic gas sensor can be checked by using a non-toxic gas that has an absorption band that overlaps the absorption band used for measuring the toxic gas. The NDIR sensor cannot distinguish which of the two gases is responsible for causing the observed absorption of radiation in the sensor. Since detectors of toxic gases typically operate at low concentration levels, the extent of overlap between the absorption band of the toxic gas and of the non-toxic gas may be relatively small, since a larger concentration of the non-toxic gas can be used with no ill effects. The method may be applied to sensors for detecting carbon monoxide or methane for example.
