    • A radio communication system (100) provides a radio air interface at a master node (102) for subscriber units associated with the master node. Among the subscriber units are several slave nodes (104, 106). The communication system has the ability to operate as a secondary user in unused spectrum portions of a frequency band otherwise reserved for primary operators. The master node accesses an authorization server (108) to obtain a list of unused channels in the region of the master node. Each slave node also contacts the authorization server to obtain a list of unused channels in the region where each respective slave node is located, via another network (118, 121). The unused channels common to the slave nodes and the master node are used to create a backup radio operating parameter list which is used by the master node if a fault occurs between the master node the authorization server.

    • A method of retaining channel use by a secondary system is described. A secondary channel used during periods of normal communication between a secondary transmitter and receiver is split into sub-bands for use during a quiet period containing quiet phases. During the quiet period, while the transmitter communicates with the receiver on one sub-band, the receiver simultaneously senses for incumbent devices on another sub-band, as well as vice-versa. Transmission and sensing do not occur simultaneously on the same sub-band and transmission is limited to only one of the sub-bands. Transmission and sensing are performed by both the transmitter and the receiver on every sub-band over the course of the quiet period. The locations of secondary receivers are determined and employed during scheduling such that devices sufficiently separated from each other transmit during different quiet phases and transmit and sense in sub-bands separated by another sub-band.

    • An apparatus and method of providing accurate and consistent open spectrum results for secondary devices from different geo-location databases is presented. The results, which may be independently derived by each database, are independent of the database queried. The comparison permits some amount of latitude in spatial and temporal consistency between the databases as errors are only indicated if the temporal or spatial discrepancies are pervasive. In addition, large percentages of different locations showing discrepancies when compared also lead to corrective action being taken. Corrective actions that may be taken include forcing problematic databases to update, shunting requests by secondary devices in the problematic locations to acceptable databases or shutting down the problematic databases entirely.
