    • 547,052. Jib cranes. COWANS, SHELDON & CO., Ltd., and PEARSON, J. B. May 20, 1941, No. 6484. [Class 78 (iv)] In a breakdown crane of the kind'in which the jib C is lowered on to a match truck D when the crane is not in use and is travelling along a track, the foot F of the jib is'forked at H so that it may be withdrawn from engagement with the hinge pin G when the jib is in its' lowermost position, while the support for the jib when not in use includes an inclined plane or cam surface L on the match truck and a co-operating roller M on the jib or vice versa, so that on lowering the jib the roller moves along the inclined surface and withdraws the forked jib foot F from the pin G so that the jib can swivel relatively to the crane structure A when the crane is travelling on a curved track. The inclined plane L is formed on a head I swivelling on the support E. Check plates O are provided on the jib foot F to prevent slewing of the jib when the crane is in use.

    • 432,679. Valves. LLOYD, I., SILLIFANT, R. R., and STILES, J. B., (trading as CLAPHAM METALLIZING CO.), 158, Stonhouse Street, Clapham, London. Nov. 28, 1934, No. 34145. [Class 135] [See also Group XXII] A poppet valve seat is made by spraying metal into a groove or recess f cut in the edge of the valve port a so that the sprayed metal forms the actual seat. The sprayed metal may be steel, nickel, aluminium-bronze, a nickel chromium iron alloy known as Inconel or the copper nickel iron alloy known under the Registered Trade Mark " Monel ", or any similar hard-wearing metal. Fig. 3 shows a suitable tool for cutting the groove f. The tool bar h is suitable for mounting in a lathe, boring mill, or milling machine and has a spigot m carried in the valve guide n or its aperture. The cutting tool k is advanced as the bar h revolves by a hand wheel or a spider l which engages a fixed stop. During the spraying process, the surfaces r are masked by sheet metal or rubber tape. After the spraying process, the edge e of the deposited metal is chamfered by a valve seating tool. The seat is of quadrilateral section and the axes x-x of all its radial sections converge to a point on the valve axis y-y. The greatest diameter of the valve seat is not materially greater than the maximum diameter of the valve head.
