    • A data recorder for imprinting indicia from an embossed printing plate and variable indicia wheels onto a form includes a bed for retaining the form, the embossed printing plate, and the variable indicia wheels. On each variable indicia wheel, the indicia characters alternate with notches about the circumference of the wheel, one of the notches registering with a detent wedge carried on a pivotable detent arm. A platen carrier supported on wheels engaging tracks below the bed is manually moved across the bed, the wheels depressing an actuator extending into the track area and causing the detent arms to pivot and engage the notches of the indicia wheels. The presentation of the indicia wheels is controlled by manually slidable selectors which are resiliently maintained in set positions by means of detent pawls which are urged into engagement with teeth on the selectors by means of parallel springs, one end of each spring secured to each detent. The other end of each spring is fastened to a bail which is normally maintained in a spring-tensioning positioning by engagement with a slide riding on rails, providing maximum detent action on the selectors. The slide which is moved by a crank secured to the platen carrier includes a pivoting return latch which engages a pick-up on each selector only on the return stroke of the platen carrier, and returning all selectors to zero. Because the slide is disengaged from the bail during the return stroke of the platen carrier, the return latch acts against a decreased detent force on the selectors, thereby minimizing the manual force required to operate the platen carrier during the imprinting operation.

    • Apparatus for successively embossing characters onto a tape in response to depression of keys representative of the characters is described. The apparatus includes a rectangular keyboard and an embossing wheel having about its periphery an annular array of embossing dies corresponding to the characters to be produced. The embossing wheel is normally continually rotated during operation of the mechanism, and each of the keys has a stem which cooperates with a stop on the embossing wheel for interrupting the rotation of the wheel with the proper die positioned at an embossing station upon the depression of any one of the keys. A cam assembly is activated by the depression of one of the keys to then cause the character positioned at the embossing station to be embossed on a tape located at such station and also to advance the tape through the embossing station for appropriately spacing successively embossed characters.

    • There is disclosed an addressing system including an addressing apparatus and addressing methods and materials used therein. A set of master cards is provided formed of porous tab card stock impregnated with a sensitizer vaporizable at 100* to 160* C. and having a selected area on one face thereof for the address in infrared absorbing ink; as disclosed, the master card is made by passing the porous tab card stock through a bath containing the sensitizer and a solvent therefor, after which the solvent is evaporated. The set of master cards is then employed to provide a master tape that is a strip of non-porous release material that is oleophobic and transparent to infrared radiation, and carrying thereon reverse reading copies of the addresses in the form of bodies of partially fused toner applied to one side of the master tape; the addresses are transferred from the master cards to the master tape utilizing a novel apparatus and method wherein a printing station is provided having a first source of infrared radiation thereat, first feed mechanism for feeding the master cards sequentially to the printing station and a second feed mechanism for feeding the master tape to the printing station to position a predetermined portion of the master tape immediately adjacent to the address on a master card positioned at the printing station, thereafter operating the first source of infrared radiation to vaporize from the master card sensitizer in areas corresponding to the address thereon onto the one surface of the master tape, applying a toner to the master tape to adhere toner to the sensitizer in areas corresponding to the address, and thereafter exposing the master tape carrying the powdered toner to a second source of infrared radiation for at least partially fusing the toner to provide a reverse reading copy of the address on the master tape. The toner comprises a vehicle body of wood resin and polymerized resin, modifiers of polyamide resin and a hydrocarbon resin and pigment of carbon black. The master tape with the addresses thereon in partially fused toner is then fed to an addressing station where an envelope or other article to be addressed is placed with the surface thereof against the partially fused toner on a section of the master tape after which heat and pressure are applied thereto to transfer the bodies of toner to the envelope and fully to fuse the toner to provide on the envelope bodies of fully fused toner in areas corresponding to the address on a master card.

    • An addressing machine in which a list of addresses of fusible material are transferred from the surface of an elongate relatively transparent address tape to an elongate relatively opaque label tape or directly to envelopes by the application of heat, leaving behind sufficient material on the address tape to enable the address tape itself to be divided into legible address labels. The address tape and label tape or envelopes are advanced intermittently to a printing station where they are juxtaposed between a heated pad and a platen. The heated pad reciprocates to apply heat to the juxtaposed portions of the tapes (or tape and envelope). The machine is arranged for ready use as a tape-totape address transfer machine or a tape-to-envelope address transfer machine.
