Cooling condensers, air blast for. - Apparatus for cooling the condenser cooling-water of steam locomotives bv direct contact with air comprises an opentopped chamber 2 mounted on a tender, the water being distributed in fine streams from perforated pipes 4 and passing downwardly through staggered perforations in a series of horizontal plates 8, while the cooling-air, which is forced in by a fan or fans 10, rises through the same perforations in the plates. The perforations in the plates should be at least 5 mm. in diameter and preferably of a cross-sectional area not less than one and a half times the area of the openings in the pipes 4. They may be of different sizes. In order to avoid cross-currents of air the chamber may be divided by vertical partitions 15. The fan delivers the air into a funnel 12 closed at the top but perforated at the sides 13 and open at the end, so as to distribute the air uniformly over the base of the chamber. The air may be delivered through two side passages, and the passages maextend the full length of the chamber. The structure is shaped to the form of the railway clearance gauge. The pipes 4 are connected at the front to a supply pipe 7 and are closed at the opposite end. The air inlets may be at the sides, as shown, or at the front, in which case the motion of the vehicle assists the action of the fan.

The hot water is distributed under pressure from pipes 4 having a comparatively small number of large perforations, whereby choking-up of the discharge openings is avoided, and a perforated strainer plate 5 is fitted horizontally in the air channel 1, near the top, to retard and break up the jets and produce a spray. A second similar plate 6 may be provided in the middle of the channel, or three plates mav be used. They may be inclined slightly upwards towards the outlet end of the air channel, to prevent the water from being carried beyond them by strong air currents, and the individual openings in the plates are larger than those in the pipes and their total area much larger.
