    • A rotary roller bit for drilling earth and rock formations, having a main body and three legs extending outwardly therefrom. Each of the legs carries a conical roller cutter with internal bearings and there is a seal around the periphery of the top of the roller cutter. The periphery of the roller cutter is spaced from the adjacent portion of the leg so as to provide a jet slot for the discharge of air. Adjacent the slot and radially inwardly is an air chamber which is formed between an annular surface of the leg and a seal ring. The air chamber is substantially greater in its dimension axially of the roller cutter and air is supplied to it under sufficient pressure to cause a jet of air to flow from the jet slot at a sufficient rate to prevent the entry of rock particles and dirt into the roller cutter.

    • An earth boring drill employing roller cutters is provided with a seal in a peripheral groove to inhibit ingress of detritus into the cutter bearing area and egress of lubricant therefrom. The shape of the seal is such that its cross section is not overly compressed or displaced when in operating position, thus preventing undue compression set, wear and heating of the seal. A preferred seal has a greater radial dimension than axial dimension by a ratio of at least one-and-one-half to one to conserve bearing space and to provide the necessary flexibility to accommodate the various movements of the cutter relative to the shaft upon which it is rotatably mounted. The roller cutter has a counterbore fitting over a short cylindrical boss from which the shaft extends on which the cutter is mounted. This provides a tortuous passage restricting ingress of detritus and substantially improved life of the drill bit.

    • An improved drill tool for drilling earth, rock, and the like as in oil industry operations includes a body member having a plurality of circumferentially spaced arms or lugs extending generally longitudinally from the body member and each having an axle portion thereon for rotatably mounting a cutting cone. The drill tool has a first flow passage with a nozzle member mounted in the end thereof and having a plurality of orifices each positioned to direct drilling fluid toward and across a bottom of the drill hole and between respective pairs of adjacent cutting cones. The drill tool has a second plurality of flow passages each having an upwardly extending portion adapted to induce upwardly flow of drilling debris dislodged by drilling fluid from a respective one of the orifices in the nozzle member. The drill tool has a third plurality of flow passages each having an end portion thereof positioned to direct drilling fluid toward an intersection of a side and the bottom of the drill hole in a manner to join with the flow of drilling fluid from respective orifices in the nozzle member and respective passages of the second plurality of flow passages.

    • A rolling cone cutter earth boring bit is provided with a sealing system that results in the seal being squeezed uniformly around the seal circumference during drilling. The bearing pin seal surface is machined eccentrically to the bearing pin by an amount equal to the radial clearance of the bearing. The bearing pin seal surface is machined about an axis that is offset from the central axis of the bearing pin in the direction of the unloaded side of the bearing pin. When the bit is drilling and the bearing pin is loaded the seal will run on an axis concentric with the axis of the seal surfaces of the bearing pin and the rolling cutter and will see uniform squeeze around its circumference.

    • An improved lubricant pressure compensator system for an earth boring drill bit for equalizing the lubricant pressure with the ambient or borehole pressure. The pressure compensator is located in a lubricant reservoir that has a passage leading out of the bit adjacent the discharge nozzle. A flexible diaphram is located in the reservoir with its lip seated against the base of the reservoir. The lip protrudes outwardly and a protector member bears downwardly against the lip. A cap bears against the protector member compressing the lip. A retainer ring holds the cap with the lip under compression. A protective centering disc is attached to the center of the diaphram.
