    • According to the present invention a damper for controlling the flow of conditioned air supplied through a supply duct to a conditioned space is provided. The damper includes a support housing which defines a flow passage which communicates the supply duct with the conditioned space. A plurality of damper blades are mounted within the support housing for pivotal movement about respective spaced apart parallel axes. A blade link interconnects the damper blades in a ganged relation so that a common pivoted orientation of the damper blades is determined by the position of the blade link. Means are provided for selectively exerting a force on the blade link which will either move the link toward the second position to increase the flow of air through the damper or for exerting a force on the blade link to move the link toward the first position to decrease the flow of air through the damper. Means are provided which allows the blade link to move toward the second position (maximum flow) in response to a force imparted on the damper blades by a build-up of pressure in the supply duct. Under such circumstances the force imparted upon the damper blades is sufficient to overcome the force exerted on the blade link to move the link toward said first position (flow substantially blocked).

Each pivot is attached to one end of an elongated eccentric member to the other end of which is attached a spring which urges the respective dosing frame to the closed or open position thereof.     • The present invention provides a valve that controls a flow of gas or solid objects through a pipe, and particularly a z-valve used in an elevated rail transportation system. The valve includes vanes hinged to a valve stem that fold into a z-shape and retract into the valve body when the valve is open. A valve cap positioned at the top of the valve stem matches the contour of the inner surface of the pipe, allowing unobstructed flow. When the valve is closed, the valve stem is elevated into the interior of the pipe and the valve cap rotates 90° to match the contour at the top, providing a seal. The vanes extend from the z-shape to completely block a cross-section of the pipe, stopping the flow. The flow may be modulated by varying the extension of the vanes to allow a portion of the flow to pass the valve.

    • A novel fire, smoke and air control damper is disclosed wherein one or more hook-shaped hinge portions formed intermediate between the longitudinal edges of each damper blade engage complementally configured hook-shaped hinge elements formed on opposite sides of the damper frame. Formed on each of the ends of each damper blade are additional hook-shaped sealing portions which are adapted to mate with the hook-shaped sealing portions of adjacent blades in the closed position in order to form a double seal. A "dead" air chamber is formed between contiguous portions of adjacent blades when those blades are in the closed position. As the blades are slightly displaced towards the open position, a seal is nonetheless maintained between the blades due to the configuration of the sealing portions thereof. As the blades are further displaced, a serpentine air path is formed having a maximum fluid frictional resistance, which resistance is further amplified by the provision of a spoiler disposed adjacent to the tip of each hook-shaped sealing portion of each blade. Finally, the blades are movable to any of a variety of open positions so that volume control is easily effectuated.In the closed position, various blade portions also engage opposite sides of an inwardly depending flange in said frame to form a seal therebetween, thereby providing a positive pressure resistant seal.

    • A fluid-flow apparatus having a damper frame provided with walls forming separate side-by-side flow paths for hot, cold and bypass air. Damper elements are pivotally mounted on shafts and arranged in the flow paths for blocking and unblocking same. Each shaft has a pinion gear mounted thereon for pivotal movement with the shaft and associated damper element. Rack gear segments are provided on a longitudinally slidably mounted carrier bar for engaging the pinion gears in a predetermined sequence which places in a blocked position one of the hot and cold air flow paths whenever the other flow path of that pair is simultaneously in an unblocked position. The bypass air flow path is unblocked when either the hot or cold air flow path is only partially unblocked. Spring or cam elements cooperate with flats on the damper element shaft for releasably retaining them in preselected positions.
