    • An apparatus for boring a wellbore, including a bit body having a first end, an inner cavity, and a second end. The first end is connected to a workstring that is configured to deliver a rotational force to the bit body. The inner cavity contains a profile having a first radial cam surface. The second end includes a working face containing a cutting member. The apparatus also includes a pilot bit rotatively connected within the inner cavity. A second radial cam surface is contained on a first end of the pilot bit. The first and second radial cam surfaces are operatively configured to deliver a hammering force. A second end of the pilot bit may include an engaging surface configured to engage a formation surrounding the wellbore. The bit body rotates relative to the pilot bit.

    • A bottomhole assembly includes: a drill bit operable to vibrate when engaged with a formation and rotated; and a suspension sub including: a stator barrel for connection to a pipe string; a traveler barrel for connection to the drill bit; a slip joint longitudinally coupling the traveler barrel to the stator barrel while allowing movement of the traveler barrel between an extended position and a retracted position; a torsional joint connecting the traveler barrel to the stator barrel at and between the positions; and one or more springs disposed between the stator barrel and the traveler barrel. The suspension is tuned relative to the drill bit to: dampen the vibration of the drill bit when the BHA is rotated at a first angular velocity; and resonate the vibration of the drill bit when the BHA is rotated at a second angular velocity, thereby imparting percussive energy to the drill bit.

    • A valve (11) for controlling the flow of a drilling fluid through a down-hole tool (10) positionable in a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation. The down-hole tool has a housing with a drilling motor therein and a drill bit (1) at an end thereof. The drilling motor (9) has a housing with a rotor (206) rotationally movable in a rotor channel (204) as the drilling fluid passes through a rotor channel between the housing and the rotor. The rotor has a bypass channel therethrough for bypassing a portion of the drilling fluid therethrough. The valve includes a valve plate positionable upstream of the motor. The valve plate (200) has at least one flow passage (226) and at least one bypass passage (220) therethrough. The flow passage is in fluid communication with the rotor channel for passing the drilling fluid therethrough. The bypass passage is in selective fluid communication with the bypass channel when the rotor rotates about the housing and moves the bypass channel into alignment with at least a portion of the bypass passage for bypassing a portion of the drilling fluid therethrough whereby a hammering effect is generated on the bit.

    • A downhole tool assembly for use in a drilling string includes a motor, a flow head, and a flow restrictor. The flow head is coupled to the motor and comprises a plurality of ports permitting fluid communication therethrough. The flow restrictor is in fluid communication with the flow head and comprises a plurality of ports permitting fluid communication therethrough. The flow restrictor is stationary with respect to the flow head, which rotates. As the flow head rotates, one or more of the plurality of ports of the flow head enters into and out of alignment with one or more of the plurality of ports of the flow restrictor such that fluid flow through the ports of the flow head and the flow restrictor is constrained to a cyclic, polyrhythmic pattern optionally including at least one interval where the fluid flow is substantially blocked by the flow restrictor.
