    • Embodiments of a method and apparatus for filtering or treating water are shown and described, each embodiment being for multiple-stage processing of water, with storage intermediate between the stages. Water is passed through a first zone of a filter housing cavity and conducted through an intermediate port to storage. When water is demanded by a usage device, water flows in reverse from storage back into the filter, to flow through the second zone for a second stage of filtering/treatment, and then out an outlet port to the usage device. Water may also flow from the water source directly through the first and second zones and to the usage device, without intermediate storage. Preferably, both first and second zones are contained and axially arranged within a single filter housing. Preferably, water flows bi-directionally through a central return tube, or other axial passage through the first zone media, so that this tube or axial passage may be used as the collector for the first-zone effluent and also the distributor for the second zone feed.

    • A water purifier includes a quick connect connector in a port that receives a tube that carries the water. The tube is received along the axis of the port in a first reference direction along the axis. The connector is assembled by inserting, in sequence, a support ring, an O-ring, and a plug into the port along the axis, but in a direction opposite the first direction. The plug is held in place by adhesive or conventional welding. To complete the assembly, a collet is inserted into the port along the axis and in the first direction. A tube is then connected to the water purifier by urging the tube through the collet, along the axis, and in the first direction. The tube is gripped by the collet, supported by the support ring, sealed by the O-ring, and stopped against the plug.

    • Multiple embodiments of a filter cartridge are disclosed, the cartridge preferably being adapted for use within a housing and including a tubular outer wall element with closures at either end, one of the closures being of unitary construction and comprising an annular ring portion for attachment to the tubular element and axially central portion. Flexible spring elements interconnect the central portion with the annular ring while being adapted for flexure into a stressed condition for urging permeable membrane portions within the ring against a filter medium contained within the cartridge for producing and maintaining a compacting force on the filter medium. Preferably, the unitary end closure cooperates with the tubular wall element and the other closure as well as with portions of the housing for assuring proper fluid flow through the filter medium. A method for filling the cartridge is also disclosed wherein the flexible spring assembly of the unitary end closure is maintained in a stressed condition until the cartridge is filled and assembled, the spring assembly then being released for causing permeable membrane portions within the ring to produce and maintain a compacting force on the filter medium.

    • A water filter is packaged in a way that permits longer dwell time and greater volume in a dwell passage of the water filter. In one embodiment the water filter includes an influent passage where a biocide is imparted to the water, a dwell passage where the water remains in contact with the biocide for at least a predetermined duration, and an effluent passage where the biocide is removed from the water. The water filter includes a replaceable cartridge mounted in a pressure vessel. By arranging the dwell passage to include a pan-shaped portion in the bottom of the vessel and an axial portion along the extremity of the cartridge, greater volume, greater mixing, and more effective disinfecting result. Another embodiment includes a series of baffles on the exterior surface of the cartridge that create further turbulence for mixing the biocide with the water.

    • A water purifier includes a quick-connect tube connector, including a port having a collet, an O-ring seal (28), and a support ring (29) between the collet (63) and the seal (28) . The collet axially receives a tube (24) for water passage. The support (29) is preferably a ring that limits radial movement of the tube (24) off the axis (26), and may be, for example, an L-shaped ring or a flat ring. In an easy to assemble embodiment, the tube (24) is received along the axis (26) of the port in a first reference direction, and the connector is assembled by inserting, in sequence, a support ring (29), an O-ring (28), and a plug into the port along the axis (26), but in a direction opposite the first direction. The plug may be held in place by adhesive or conventional welding. To complete the assembly, a collet (63) is inserted into the port in the first direction, and a tube (24) is then connected to the water purifier by urging the tube (24) through the collet (63) in the first direction. The tube (24) is thereby gripped by the collet (63), supported by the support ring (29), sealed by the O-ring (28), and stopped against the plug. Weeping at the port thereby may be eliminated by maintaining axial relation between the tube (24), the seal (28), and the collet (63).
