    • A device for purifying exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine comprises a tubular housing with an exhaust gas inlet at one end and an exhaust gas discharge at the opposite end, and with a catalyst carrier disposed in the housing between the inlet and the discharge, which has a plurality of axially extending gas passages with a catalyst therein for the passage of exhaust gases therethrough, for the purification thereof. A ring is disposed in the tubular housing adjacent each end of the catalyst carrier and it has an interior diameter which is less than the outer diameter of the catalyst so that the gases are deflected inwardly around the ring. To ensure that the gases do not pass over the periphery of the catalyst carrier into an insulation space and without passing through the catalyst containing passages, a foil sheet is provided which extends over the periphery of the catalyst carrier and is secured to and sealed with the ring. The securement may take place between a small diameter portion of the outer housing and the ring, or between the outer edge of an angle shaped ring and the foil sheet. The foil sheet may extend inwardly from each end and overlap in the center or be extended only a few inches over each end of the catalyst carrier so as to ensure the correct flow of the exhaust gases.

    • A support arrangement is used for elastically mounting a monolithic ceramic honeycomb structure within a housing in an exhaust gas pipe and consists of a holding angle and a molded part formed of a soft, flexible material. The holding angle is rigidly secured to the inner surface of the housing with one of its legs extending along the wall of the housing and the other extending radially inwardly from the inner housing surface. The molded part is rigidly secured to the inner end of the other leg of the holding angle and extends from its point of rigid securement in generally the same direction as but spaced inwardly from the one leg of the holding angle. At its end opposite the end secured to the holding angle, the molded part is bent radially outwardly into sliding contact with the inwardly facing surface of the holding angle. The combination of the holding angle and molded part form a cavity which may be filled with a heat-resistant material. Further, the molded part is shaped to provide a shoulder or bearing surface for one end of the catalyst and also to afford a corrugation-like indentation for absorbing expansion and contraction of the catalyst.

    • An automobile exhaust gas muffler construction for flowing exhaust gases, comprises a housing having spaced apart semi-cylindrical end walls interconnected by tangential straight side walls. The housing also includes a front wall having a tubular inlet extending therethrough and through at least a portion of the housing, and a rear wall with a tubular outlet extending through the rear wall and through at least a portion of the housing. The tubular inlet and tubular outlet each have a gas flow slot passage defined along its length within the housing and gases flow from the inlet through this slot in the housing and through spiral passages defined by sound-muffling walls. The spiral passages of the inlet communicate with an expansion chamber defined in the housing which, in turn, communicates with spiral passages defined around the outlet connection.
