    • Provided are a thin-film transistor (TFT) substrate and a display device having the same. In the TFT substrate and the display device having the same, first and second drain electrodes of first and second TFTs connected to first and second pixel electrodes, respectively, are vertically bent a plurality of times. The distance between each of the first and second source electrodes and the first or second drain electrode is maintained at a minimum interline gap to increase the distance between a data line and each of the first and second drain electrodes and minimize the length of a region of each of the first and second drain electrodes adjacent to the data line. Consequently, a coupling capacitance between the data line and each of the first and second drain electrodes can be reduced, and each unit pixel region can have a uniform parasite capacitance within a predetermined range. In addition, the luminance deviation of a display device, which performs inversion driving, can be reduced.

    • An LCD device includes a first substrate having a first base substrate, patterns disposed at different heights with respect to the first base substrate, and an insulation layer formed on the first base substrate and the patterns. The insulation layer has raised portions corresponding to the patterns. A side of the raised portions forms an inclination angle of no more than about 45° when a height of the raised portions is more than about 3000 angstroms, the side of the raised portions forms an inclination angle of no more than about 50° when a height of the raised portions is in a range of about 2000 angstroms to about 3000 angstroms, and the side of the raised portions forms an inclination angle of no more than about 90° when a height of the raised portions is more than about 2000 angstroms. Therefore, light leakage may be minimized.

    • Disclosed is liquid crystal display, a substrate for a liquid crystal display and a method for manufacturing the substrate. The substrate comprises a transparent electrode formed on the insulating substrate, and a black matrix formed on the transparent electrode and performing the function also of protrusions. The method comprises the steps of forming a transparent electrode on a substrate, forming a black matrix layer, depositing a photosensitive material on the black matrix layer to form a photosensitive layer, patterning the photosensitive layer, and etching the black matrix layer using the photosensitive layer as a mask. The liquid crystal display comprises, among other things, redundant data lines formed on a same layer as the pixel electrodes; an insulating second substrate provided opposing the first substrate at a predetermined distance; a common electrode formed on the second substrate; and a protrusion pattern formed on the common electrode in at least regions corresponding to the positions of the redundant data lines, the protrusion pattern being made of an insulating material.

    • An LCD has a storage electrode wire between long sides of partitions of a pixel electrode and gate lines or data lines. A gate wire and a storage electrode wire are formed on a substrate and covered with a gate insulating layer. A data wire is formed on the gate insulating layer and covered with a passivation layer. A storage electrode line and some storage electrodes are disposed between the long sides of the partitions and the gate or the data lines, and between the long sides of the partitions. Other storage electrodes disposed between the short sides of the partitions and the gate or the data lines are covered by the pixel electrode. A storage electrode between the short side of the first portion and the long side of the partition is spaced apart from the first partition by at least 3 &mgr;m.

    • Flat panel display devices having improved signal line repair capability utilize repair lines which have reduced parasitic capacitance with other active signal lines when connected to provide a repair function. This reduced parasitic capacitance is a result of a reduced number of overlaps between active signal lines (or other repair lines) and each repair line performing a repair function. A main repair line is provided on a display substrate to provide a repair function in the event one of the signal lines is defective. If a repair function is needed because a data line is defective (e.g., "opened"), this main repair line is electrically connected to a first end of the defective data line and indirectly electrically connected to a second end of the defective data line. The indirect electrical connection is provided by a sub-repair line, which can be electrically connected (i.e., "shorted") to the main repair line, and a data line extension which is electrically connected to a second end of the defective data line and the sub-repair line. To further reduce parasitic capacitance caused by overlaps between wiring patterns, the main repair line and data line extension are provided at a first wiring level and the data line and sub-repair line are provided at a second wiring level.

    • A pixel in IPS LCDs according to the embodiments of the present invention is symmetrical with respect to a data line and a gate line. The data line longitudinally passes through the center of the pixel, and the gate line transversely passes through the center of the pixel. A pixel is confined to an area enclosed by two adjacent transverse common electrode lines and four longitudinal common electrodes which are branches of the common electrode lines. Among the four common electrodes, two are connected to one of the two common electrode lines, and the other two are connected to the other of the common electrode lines. Each pixel has two longitudinal common electrodes overlapped with the data line, four longitudinal pixel electrodes arranged between the common electrodes, and two two-channel TFTs. Each pixel further has two storage electrodes overlapped with the pixel electrodes and electrically connected to the gate line. The storage electrode and the pixel electrode together form a storage capacitor.
