    • An apparatus 1 for making welded frames 4 is provided, the apparatus 1 including a pair of support beds 2 provided with actuating means for moving them towards and away from each other, above the beds 2 is mounted a pair of flat plates 5 which are movable towards each other in a horizontal plane to form together a horizontal welding plate, which has means for lowering and raising it and, a vertical welding plate 7 is mounted above the plates to be movable up and down. The method of making the welded frame comprises the steps of: cutting the mitre joints in the frame 4; holding two frames 4 with their mitre joints spaced apart for subsequent joining; lowering the vertical welding plate 7 between the exposed mitre joints; pushing the mitre joints against the welding plate 7; heating the welding plate 7; raising the welding plate 7; pushing the heated mitre joints into contact, to form a butt joint; placing a filler strip 10 of plastics material across the exposed upper part of the contacting mitre joints; lowering the horizontal welding plate 5 onto the strip 10; and heating the welding plate 5 to fuse the strip 10 into the joint. The invention is particularly useful for the joining of plastics door and window frames. The advantage of putting the strip 10 across the exposed surface is that there will now be no hollow or recess in the face of the frame due to the molten plastics material flowing downwardly into the joint under gravity and this will be aesthetically pleasing.

    • 938,936. Locking-inserts. JOHN WALSH & CO. (INSERTS) Ltd. Sept. 22, 1961 [June 30, 1960], No. 22872/60. Class 89 (1). A locking insert comprises a flange 13 with a shallow conical surface 14 on its underside and connected to a shank 11 by a neck 12. The insert which may have a plain or screw-threaded bore or a projecting stud, is inserted in a hole in an aluminium &c. block until the flange rests on the block, Fig. .5 (not shown), when it is hammered into the block. The block-material displaced by the flange fills the annular groove 16, Fig. 6, surrounding the neck 12 and prevents withdrawal of the insert which may be of casehardened, cadmium-plated steel. The volume of the groove 16 extending out to the diameter of the shank may be 10% less than that of the metal displaced by the flange. This may be serrated at 17 and formed with a groove, Fig. 2B (not shown), in its surface 14. Two or more flanges 13, 23, Fig. 7, may be provided on the insert.

    • 6522. Walsh, J. March 17. Gas, oil, and vapour lamps.-Globes A, formed with double-convex or plano-convex glass or water lenses B, are employed in combination with burners C, which emit a number of independent flames D in a direction parallel to the medial plane a, b, Fig. 1, or to the plane side a , b , Fig. 5, of the lens. In incandescent burners, an ordinary mantle is used, but the light emitted is split up into separate beams by the use of either an opaque screen D', Fig. 5, in which slots D are provided for the passage of the light, or strips of asbestos or the like. The dimensions of the separate flames, and the method of constructing the curves of the lenses, are exemplified in the Provisional Specification, which also states that two globes may be used, the inner one having the lens on the inside and the outer one on the outside.

    • 1965. Walsh, J. Jan. 25. Stands for bicycles. The stand comprises a piece 2, Fig. 1, grooved at 9 to receive the rear wheel 13, and having a cross-piece 8 as shown, the whole being mounted on wheels. An arm 3 pivoted at 10 to the piece 2 may be grooved and provided with a strap at its upper end to secure the bottom bar, or may, as in the form shown, be provided with a special clip 12, shown separately in Fig. 4. The clip comprises an octagonal part 17, Fig. 4, secured by a screw 18 to the arm 3, and provided with a bolt and nut 20 by which the width of its arms 19 may be adjusted. The arms 19 are sprung over the frame tube 11, rubber or like rollers 16 and a felt lining being provided to prevent scratching. The wheel 13 is secured in the slot 9 by a rubber band 14 attached to one side, and adapted to engage a hook on the other side of the slot. When not in use, the arm 3 is turned to lie along the piece 2, being secured in that position by attaching the band 14 to a hook 21 formed on it.
