    • A system is disclosed that integrates secondary content, such as articles retrieved from a collaborative encyclopedia or other content site, into an electronic catalog system or site that hosts an interactive electronic catalog. In some embodiments, the system operates by retrieving secondary content articles from an external system or site, and by supplementing these articles with interactive display elements for accessing related catalog content and/or functions. For example, if an article mentions a particular catalog item or group of catalog items, it may be supplemented with a selectable display element for viewing catalog content associated with the referenced item or item group. The supplemented articles are made available to users via pages of the electronic catalog system or site.

Each of the profiles has one or more items associated with the profile. The user selects one or more of the profiles while browsing or searching for items. The items associated with the selected profile are provided to the user. The user's interaction, or lack of interaction, with the items is monitored and analyzed. Based on the monitored interaction, a relevance of the selected profile relative to the other profiles is dynamically adjusted along with a relevance of particular items for the selected profile. For example, items may be added or removed from the list based on the monitored user interactions.

    • The number of connections and/or requests needed to obtain or provide image content in an electronic environment can be reduced by dynamically composing the content when needed to serve a request. In a case where a large number of images are to be transmitted across a network, the images can be determined at the time of the request for transmission and can be composed into a single, master image. Positional information for the images can be stored and sent with the master image to a device requesting the transmission. Using the positional information with dimensional information for the images, the device is able to use an application such as cascading style sheets (CSS) sprites to extract each of the plurality of images, thus obtaining all the images using a single request and single connection. Multiple master images can be used if appropriate.

    • Various embodiments of a system and method for generating recommendations based on similarities between location information of multiple users are described. Various embodiments may include a location-based recommendation system configured to, for each given user of a group of users, determine the given user has traveled to one or more respective locations and determine one or more characteristics of the given user. The system may also determine that a particular user has traveled to or will travel to each of one or more particular locations. The system may further determine a similarity between the one or more particular locations and one or more locations to which specific ones of the group of users have traveled. The system may generate a recommendation for the particular user based on at least some of the determined characteristics of the specific ones of the group of users for which the similarity was determined.
