    • A telephone line testing device detects the integrity of a telephone loop connected to a subscriber's modular telephone jack. The device includes a modular connector at a far end of a flexible electrically conductive cable, the other end of the cable terminating in a circuit enclosure housing a testing circuit. The testing circuit, when connected through the cable and modular connector to the telephone line, presents a low impedance to the line, drawing the line “offhook.” The testing circuit then tests the current potential of the line, and, if the current is excessive, presents a visual indication thereof. If the tip and ring signals of the telephone loop are reversed, reverse polarity is visually indicated. Otherwise, if the tested current falls within a predefined acceptable range, a visual indication that the telephone line is in working order is provided.

    • Method and apparatus for purging air from a tubing network finds particular utility as a component part of a blood constituent processing system. Collection and return needles of a disposable tubing network are initially contained within a common antiseptic enclosure. A purge fluid (e.g., saline solution) may then be introduced into the interior chamber of the enclosure via one of the needles and withdrawn from the interior chamber via the other of the needles. Air entrained in the tubing network may thus be trapped within the common enclosure itself and/or vented therefrom via a one-way valve and hydrophobic microbe filter and/or the entrained air pockets may be encouraged to flow to a separate suitable air trap location of the tubing network whereby the network is purged of air.

The system operates so as to either provide a difference of adjacent charges along a channel either with or without an isolating bit or bits or to provide subtraction of the charges selected along a sequence of charges passing through the CCD channel. One use of the system in accordance with the invention is to sense moving targets in a scene having a substantially fixed or non-moving background.

    • The capacitance of a compensating reverse biased diode is added to the capacitance of a pn junction formed by surface depletion and inversion in a charge coupled device having variations in depletion capacitance which are to be compensated. Because the compensating diode is connected in an opposite sense with respect to the pn junction, an increase in small signal variations in the potential across the pn junction causes a decrease in small signal variations in the potential across the compensating diode. The resulting change in the capacitance of the pn junction is accompanied by a corresponding opposite change in the capacitance of the compensating diode so that the combined capacitance of the two elements remains nearly constant during all small signal variations in potential.

    • A charge coupled device (CCD) transversal filter (TVF) having an improved electrode configuration and connecting arrangement which minimizes the noise that is added to the signal to provide a relatively high amplitude output signal and a relatively high output signal-to-noise ratio. The CCD transversal filter operates with the weighting coefficients determined by the one sided width of the electrodes and with one end of the split electrodes coupled to the output and the other ends of the split electrodes coupled to a reference voltage source. When some of the weighting coefficients of the desired impulse response are negative the output ends of the weighting electrodes are selectively connected to either the inverting or noninverting common connections of a differential amplifier in turn providing the transversal filter output signals. For a single polarity impulse response, all of the electrodes are coupled to an output arrangement without requiring an inversion. In the one sided transversal filter of the invention the net output signal in terms of charge is the same as for a conventional two-sided transversal filter but the electrode area contributing noise is substantially less than in the conventional two-sided arrangement. As the noise charge generated within a bucket is transferred down the channel, it becomes coherent from side to side and the charge added to the signal and sensed on the following electrodes is not reduced in the system of the invention. Because the total electrode capacitance is a function of total electrode area the system provides a significant increase in voltage swing at the output and has a further advantage that the effect of the input noise of the output differential amplifier is also significantly reduced because of the relatively large signal.

    • A CTD (charge transfer device) transversal filter that utilizes displacement current charge substraction techniques to create positive displacement current charge summation for some electrodes and negative displacement current charge summation for other electrodes into and out of a common electrode node. The operation is accomplished by shifting by one half bit all signal charges within the negative tap structure with respect to the signal charges within the positive tap structure. Thus, only a single summing capacitance node is utilized with all taps, plus and minus, being connected together, eliminating the differential amplifier requirement of other CTD transversal filters. An arrangement of either zero tap weights with an extra one bit delay or a separate high-frequency pulse eliminating a one bit delay are utilized to provide or not provide, as desired, zero weighting between the tap sections. The arrangements of the invention provide substantially any desired class of impulse response function and in most arrangements, clock pick-up noise is substantially cancelled and capacitive imbalance between positive and negative sections, being common, is eliminated. The invention applies to both analog and digital tap weight designs.
