    • A minimally invasive reaming assembly for creating an entry portal into the canal of a bone and for providing a working channel in which to ream the canal of a bone. The assembly includes a sleeve, a housing and an inner reamer. The sleeve is an elongated cylindrically-shaped hollow sleeve that has a proximal and a distal end, with the distal end having a plurality of cutting blades. The housing is attached to the sleeve and is generally cylindrical in shape and it has a top portion, a bottom portion and a through bore. The top portion includes a releasable locking mechanism for engaging the inner reamer within the housing. The inner reamer has an elongated cannulated body and proximal and distal ends. The distal end has a rotatable reaming head and the proximal end has a drill shaft and a connector for connection to a drill. A portion of the body includes an annular collar with a tab for engaging a notch in the housing. The reamer is sized and shaped for insertion through the bore of the housing and the sleeve. The reaming assembly is configured to create an entry portal into the canal of a bone and to provide a working channel in which a plurality of reamers of graduated sizes are inserted for progressively reaming the canal of a bone.

    • This invention pertains to coated polymer sheets which are useful as visibly transparent heat reflective thermal control films and which are suitable for use in glazing applications. The coated polymer sheets are characterized by a high transmission of visible radiation (i.e., visibly transparent) and a high reflectance at one or more near infrared radiation center wavelengths (i.e., heat reflective), and rely primarily on the interference effects of the dielectric layers to achieve these results. More specifically, the present invention pertains to thermal control films comprising (a) a thin flexible polymeric sheet having a first face and an opposite second face and a thickness of from 0.1 to 100 mils; and, (b) a multilayer coating adhered to said first face, said coating comprising two or more contiguous alternating layers of high and low index of refraction inorganic dielectric material of optical thickness approximately equal to one quarter of an infrared center wavelength, &lgr;0, between 750 and 2000 nm; said thermal control film characterized by an average transmittance of visible radiation of wavelength 380 to 750 nm at 0° incidence of at least 50%; said thermal control film further characterized an average reflectance of infrared radiation in an infrared radiation band which is at least 100 nm wide and falls within the wavelength band 750 to 2000 nm, at 0° incidence, of at least 50%.

    • A laser satellite communication system which avoids atmospheric, wind and turbulence effects. A satellite or high altitude platform communication system includes an earth-orbiting satellite or high altitude platform carrying a laser communications receiver and an acknowledgement transmitter. A ground terminal having a laser communications transmitter which is caused to continuously transmit large data block signals. When one block of data signals is received at the satellite or platform, an acknowledgement signal is sent to earth from the satellite or platform. The ground terminal receives the acknowledgement signal and causes the ground terminal laser communication transmitter to continuously transmit the next succeeding large block data signals. This process is repeated until all of the data has been received by the earth-orbiting satellite or high altitude platform, whereby all of the large data block signals are received by the laser communication receiver through scintillation windows in the atmosphere.
