    • A communication system includes a master host unit, communication links, a remote server unit, an analog communication medium, and remote units. The master host unit communicates analog signals with service provider interfaces using a first set of bands of analog spectrum. The master host unit communicates digitized spectrum in N-bit words across communication links and converts between the first set of bands and N-bit words. The remote server unit communicates N-bit words with the master host unit across communication links and converts between N-bit words and a second set of bands of analog spectrum. The remote server unit communicates the second set of bands with the remote units across the analog communication medium. Each remote unit frequency converts the second set of bands to a third set of bands of analog spectrum and transmits and receives wireless signals, associated with service provider interfaces, over air interfaces.

    • An apparatus for enclosing electronic components such as used in telecommunication systems is disclosed. The apparatus includes a housing defining a chamber, with the housing comprising a front wall having an outer surface and a length dimension greater than a width dimension. A pair of opposing side walls are each contiguous with the front wall, and a pair of opposing end walls are each contiguous with the side walls and the front wall. A plurality of non-removable heat transfer fins are an integral part of the outer surface of the front wall. The fins are positioned at an angle with respect to the length dimension of the front wall, with each of the fins having a continuous uninterrupted structure across the outer surface between the opposing side walls. A removable back cover opposite the front wall is configured to seal the chamber of the housing.

    • A method and apparatus for sectorizing coverage of a cellular communications area includes providing a remote unit having microcell antenna units. Each microcell antenna unit is configured to cover a particular sector. The remote unit is connected to a sectorized base station unit which is connected to a mobile telecommunications switching office. Separate digitized streams representative of telephone signals received from the mobile telecommunications switching office are generated corresponding to the microcell antenna units and the separate digitized streams are multiplexed and transmitted to the remote unit. The remote unit demultiplexes the multiplexed digitized streams into the separate digitized streams corresponding to the microcell antenna units and the separate digitized streams are converted to RF signals for coverage of a particular sector by the corresponding microcell antenna unit. Separate digitized streams are separately generated for each microcell antenna unit representative of RF signals received at the microcell antenna unit for a particular sector. The separately generated digitized streams are multiplexed at the remote unit and transmitted to the sectorized base station unit. At the sectorized base station unit, the multiplexed digitized streams are demultiplexed into the separate digitized streams corresponding to microcell antenna units and the separate digitized streams are converted to RF signals for provision to the mobile telecommunications switching office. Diversity at the remote units is also provided.

    • A microcellular communications network includes a plurality of base station units and corresponding antenna units. Each includes either conventional transmitters and receivers or all digital transmitter and receiver equipment, and interface circuitry to a mobile telecommunications switching office. The microcell traffic output is applied to a frame generator/multiplexer. The output of the frame generator/multiplexer is applied to a digitally modulated laser and conveyed by fiber to a remote antenna unit, which demultiplexes the microcell traffic signal, applies it to a digital-to-analog converter, and applies it to a power amplifier and a main antenna. The received signals are filtered, digitized, multiplexed together and transmitted over the optical fiber back to the base station. The strongest signal is selected for use. Deployment of an all digital microcellular communications system occurs in two stages. Digital filtering of the digitized RF signal is also provided, and a digital passive handoff system provides for an FFT analysis of all traffic in the cell and passive switching in response thereto.

    • A passive handoff cellular communication system includes a cell divided into a plurality of zones. A base station is connected by transmission apparatus to a plurality of antenna units. The base station includes analog RF signal generation circuitry for generating a plurality of RF signals on different channels and a first switch responsive to a first control signal for switching and combining the RF signals to form a composite RF signal for each zone. Analog-to-digital conversion circuitry converts the composite signal for each zone to a digitized stream of samples and applies the samples to the transmission apparatus for transmission to each corresponding antenna unit. Each antenna unit includes digital-to-analog conversion circuitry for receiving the digitized stream of samples from the base station, reconstructing a corresponding composite analog RF signal, and applying an amplified signal to the antenna The base stations further include a second switch and combining means responsive to a second control signal for selectively combining the RF signals from the antenna units to form a plurality of composite signals for application to the receivers of the base station. A controller monitors the digitized streams of samples from all of the antenna units, digitally analyzes the energy level of each channel in each zone, and generates the first and second control signals to selectively control the zones in which each channel is broadcast and the zone from which each channel is received.
