    • The present invention relates to a technique for automatically cataloging and storing pictorial and/or written sections of information in the form of, for example 35-mm slides, X-rays, store catalog pages, etc. in a database for subsequent retrieval by end users of the database. In accordance with the present technique, a bar-code label, including a unique bar-code, is assigned and affixed to each piece or section of information to be separately stored in the database. Each section of information is sequentially fed into a recording arrangement where (a) the bar-code versus a brief description of the information section is recorded in a computer memory, (b) an image of the pictorial and/or written information section is transformed into a video signal and recorded on a separate location of a video tape or disk, and (c) the location of the video signal on the video tape or disk for each section of information is recorded in the computer memory with the associated bar-code and brief description.

    • The present invention relates to a technique for the synchronization of multiplexed television signals within each burst signals received at a remote station or satellite in a TDMA communication system from non-colocated ground stations. The technique employs a dynamic master/slave ground station arrangement where a first station signing on assumes the role of the master ground station. Other stations subsequently signing on synchronize their transmissions to the master station signal burst or the signal burst of the last station to sign on by using apparatus which monitors the received burst from the remote station, measures its own signal delay to the distant station and then phase-locks its local subcarrier clock to the master or last station's transmission burst. Dynamic transfer to the second station signing on occurs when the current master station terminates transmission for any reason.

    • A method and system for creating an electronic journal entry based on a mnemonic, wherein the mnemonic is created by a terminal in response to receiving a command from a user at a location-of-interest. The mnemonic comprises calendrical time of the command, an audio recording, and a photo that was recorded and captured at that location-of-interest. The user can retrieve the mnemonic from memory at a later time to listen to the audio recording and view the photo to help him recall the details of the location-of-interest. Once the user recalls the details, the journal entry is created by adding text, audio recordings, photos, and videos. As part of creating the journal entry, the user can provide authorization information for the journal entry. Once the user has finished creating the journal entry, the terminal transmits it to a data-processing system where an electronic journal of the user is updated.

    • Security is improved in a communication system in which a communication connection is established when a user who has received a software button on his computing device (a Recipient) clicks on the button. When a Recipient first actuates a software button, a basic type of communication connection is established, during which the Recipient's identity can be verified. The Recipient then establishes a personal identification code, which he will have to provide upon future actuations of the software button. The system then enables other types of communication connections to be established by the Recipient. After the Recipient actuates the software button and verifies his identity, the system remembers the identity and location of the computing device he is using. When the Recipient subsequently actuates the software button, the identity and location of his computing device are checked, and verification of his identity is suppressed if they have not changed.

    • The present invention concerns a method and apparatus for memory and channel sharing in a communication switching network which uses packet switching. In one form of the invention memory and channel sharing is provided within a packet switch. The packet switch includes a memory for storing a plurality data packets and a router that routes data packets from the memory to a particular output port. The router is operable to route data packets to either a dedicated output port, in other words, an output port defined by the virtual circuit path of the data packet, or a shared output port. In another form of the invention memory and channel sharing is provided by a packet switch in conjunction with a terminal. Protection lines which are provided in transmission systems can be used as the shared channels.

    • A modular growable packet switching arrangement is constructed from a plurality of packet switches and a novel interconnect fabric. The interconnect fabric includes a plurality of cell routers, for receiving data packets and routing them to a plurality of packet switches, where each cell router includes at least one connection to each packet switch. The interconnect fabric also includes a sorting network for receiving concurrently arriving data packets, sorting the data packets based upon their addresses, and sending the sorted data packets to the inputs of the cell routers. The sorted data packets are arranged such that all data packets which must be transmitted to the same packet switch are sent to different cell routers. Then, all packets which are destined for a common packet switch may be routed there, each from a different cell router.
