    • PURPOSE:To lengthen the lifetime of refractory material in a converter, by using the converter in upside down position because the damage of the refractory material in an LD converter is caused at portions lower than the trunnion line more than at upper portions. CONSTITUTION:Cylindrical barrel-shaped shell 6, which has openings 4, 5 of diameters smaller than of the barrel at the top and the bottom, is lined with refractory material 7 to form an LD converter. A tapping hole 10 and a stand-by tapping hole 12 are installed symmetrically about the trunnion 11, the stand-by tapping hole being closed. A bottom opening 5 out of the two openings made at the top and the bottom is closed with furnace bottom bricks 8 to form the furnace bottom. In that position, oxygen top-blowing refining is repeated to continue the operation with damaged bottom bricks replaced. During the operation the bricks 7 in the furnace is damaged mostly at protions lower than the trunnion 11, so that the converter is turned upside down and is operated using the opening 4 as the bottom, and the opening 5 as the furnace opening, using the stand-by tapping hole 12 as a tapping hole with the tapping hole 12 closed. Hereby, the refractory material 7 is damaged mostly at portions upper than the trunnion 11 in normal position shown in the figure, causing consumption equally at all portions, so that life-time is remarkably lengthened.

    • PURPOSE:To increase the concentration of iron oxide in slag and to accelerate the dephosphorization reaction of molten steel without increasing the oxygen concentration in the molten steel, by inclining the converter during oxygen blowing or after blowing out and sending oxygen in the boundary limits of molten steel and molten slag, on occasion of carrying out steel making refining by bottom blowing converter. CONSTITUTION:Concentration of FeO in molten slag is smaller and progress of dephosphorization reaction is slower than the case of oxygen top blowing converter at the operation of bottom blowing converter. Especially, the above tendency is remarkable and the dephosphorization reaction is not accelerated at the point of time of having a high carbon content yet. Oxygen is blown moving the converter on the slant on the way of oxygen blowing or after blowing out, making so as to be the oxygen from the tuyere of furnace bottom brought in the boundary limits of molten steel and molten slag. FeO concentration in the molten slag is increased by the oxidation reaction in the boundary limits without increasing O2 concentration in the molten steel and P in the molten steel is oxidized to P2O3 by FeO and the dephosphorization reaction is accelerated by forming a stable (CaO)4P2O5 reacting P2O5 with CaO in the slag.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of spitting and fusion loss of lining brick of converter by blowing CaO having mol number of two times or more of SiO2 produced by the oxidation of Si that occurs in the early stage of oxygen blowing at the operation of bottom blown converter. CONSTITUTION:Powder of quicklime is blown an slagging agent together with oxygen gas from the tuyere of furnace bottom at the time of refining pig iron for steel by oxygen blowing in the bottom blowing converter. On this occasion, SiO2 is formed by the oxidation of Si at the early stage of blowing at first and blowing amount and speed of CaO are controlled so as to exist more CaO than forming dicalcium silicate of (CaO)2.SiO2 by produced slag always. Mol ratio of CaO:SiO2 in produced slag is made at 2:1 or more from the early stage of blowing and all produced SiO2 is changed to a stable (CaO)2SiO2. Accordingly, basic lining refractory material such as MgO etc. is not spoiled by free SiO2 by fusion or yield of molten steel is not lowered by spitting phenomena.

    • PURPOSE:To achieve dephosphorization effect with less lime use amount and reduce the amount of slag formation by adding part of quicklime for desulfurization at the time when the C content of the bath has decreased at the end period of blowing, at the bottom blowing converter operation. CONSTITUTION:In producing steel by oxidation refining molten iron in the bottom blowing converter, quicklime powder as a slag forming material is blown together with oxygen for refining through the bottom tuyere. Since the FeO formed by the oxygen blown near the tuyere is used preferentially for oxidation decarbonation reaction of C in the bath at the initial period of refining, the oxidation of P in the bath by FeO begins on a full scale from about final 20% of the time when the decarbonation reaction progresses and has entered low carbon region. Hence, at this timing, i.e., at the time when the greater part of the decarbonization reaction ends upon lapse of 80% of blowing time, CaO as flux for dephosphorization slag is blown 4-20kg per ton of molten steel together with oxygen through the bottom tuyere. Slag amount can be less, hence the losses of FeO into the slag are reduced.
