    • In a digital information reproducing apparatus a digital signal having passed through a band-limited transmission system is waveform-­shaped at a threshold level controlled to its optimal value so that the information can be properly read out. For this purpose, the apparatus is equipped with a threshold level control circuit for controlling the threshold level to shape the waveform of the input signal. This threshold level control circuit comprises a first control circuit (8, 10,11) for controlling the threshold level with reference to a read clock extracted from the input signal, and a second control circuit (5, 9, 10, 11) for controlling the threshold level of a shaped signal which is obtained by waveform-shaping the input signal so that the DC component of the shaped signal becomes a predetermined value. The control of the threshold level is performed by cooperation of the first (8,10,11) and second control circuits (5, 9, 10, 11). The first control circuit is adapted to control the threshold level in accord­ance with a difference between the shaped signal obtained by waveform-shaping the input signal and the read-out signal obtained by synchronizing the shaped signal with the read clock. Thus, the threshold level for waveform-shaping a modulated channel code signal can be controlled optimally regardless of whether the modulation system is DC-free or not. The second control circuit serves to prevent spurious lock of the first control circuit.

    • Disclosed herein is an optical information reproducing apparatus having a phase difference tracking system which is free from an influence of a tangential phase different of output signals from a photodetector. The photodetector comprises first through fourth photocells which are respectively disposed at first through fourth quadrants defined by a first straight line parallel to an information track image and a second straight line perpendicular to the first straight line. Output signals of the first and second photocells are delayed for a specified time by respective first and second delaying circuits. Output signals of the first delaying circuit and the third photocell are added by a first adder, and output signals of the second delaying circuit and the fourth photocell are added by a second adder. A phase comparator produces a tracking error signal from a phase difference between output signals of the first and second adders. Alternatively, a first phase comparator produces a phase difference between the output signals of the first and second photocells, and/or a second comparator produces a phase difference between the output signals of the third and fourth photocells. At least one of output signals of the first and second comparator is used for producing a tracking error signal.

    • A magnetic head is fixedly mounted on the cassette holder in a cassette tape recorder. When a taper cassette is inserted into the cassette holder, a magnetic tape is brought into contact with the front face of the magnetic head through an access opening in the tape cassette. In response to selection of stop, fast-forward, and rewind modes of operation, a pad shifter disposed on the cassette holder adjacent to the magnetic head is moved to displace a pad in the tape cassette out of pressed contact with the magnetic tape. When in a recording or playback mode of operation, the pad shifter is retracted to allow the pad to resiliently press the magnetic tape against the magnetic head. The tape recorder is rendered small in size particularly in the transverse direction of the tape cassette inserted.
