    • An electrodeless fluorescent light source including an electrodeless lamp containing a metal iodide or iodine. A fluorescing material is disposed between the electrodeless lamp and an outer envelope. When the contents of the electrodeless lamp are excited by high frequency power, excited iodine atoms emit ultraviolet radiation. The ultraviolet radiation impinges on the fluorescing material causing it to emit visible light. The fluorescing material may be a solid phosphor material on the outer surface of the electrodeless lamp, a solid phosphor material on the inner surface of the outer envelope, a gaseous phosphor material in the space between the electrodeless lamp and the outer envelope, or some combination thereof.

    • Light source wherein high frequency power is capacitively coupled to a low pressure discharge includes at least one metallized power coupling conductor. A discharge lamp includes an envelope which is typically pear-shaped with a re-entrant cavity. The lamp envelope encloses a fill material which forms during discharge a plasma which emits ultravoilet radiation and typically includes on its inner surface a phosphor coating. An outer conductor is disposed around the outer surface of the lamp envelope. A conductive coating disposed on the inner surface of the re-entrant cavity forms the inner conductor. The outer conductor can be a conductive mesh or can be a conductive coating disposed on the outer surface of the lamp envelope in a pattern which permits light to escape from the lamp. When the conductive coating of the inner conductor is substantially more than one skin depth in thickness at the frequency of operation, the re-entrant cavity is substantially field-free and can be used to house power source circuitry. When the conductive coating of the outer conductor is substantially more than one skin depth in thickness at the frequency of operation, the light source is prevented from radiating high frequency power. A high frequency power source can be included in the light source.

    • A light source, including a high pressure discharge lamp and a starting pulse generator, such as a spiral line pulse generator, utilizes a generally straight elongated conductor, or starting aid, in close proximity to an outer surface of the discharge tube to provide efficient coupling of the starting pulse to the discharge lamp. The starting aid extends between a region proximate one of the electrodes and a region proximate the other of the electrodes. The starting aid provides within the discharge lamp an ionization path of minimum length free of circumferential turns when the conductor is energized by the pulse generator. The starting aid can be affixed to the discharge tube or can be mounted in one or more support brackets.
