    • Method and apparatus are disclosed for providing Moire distance and displacement measurements of a diffusely reflective surface of an object or support. More particularly, a first grating is physically located, formed, or printed on the diffusely reflective surface. An image of the first grating is formed on a second grating by an imaging means for generating a Moire pattern behind the second grating. At an initial position of the diffusely reflective surface relative to the imaging means, the periods of the image of the first grating and the second grating match. Movement of the diffusely reflective surface in a direction normal thereto and away from the initial position produces a spatially varying intensity pattern caused by the Moire between a shifting and changing magnified pattern of the image of the first grating and a pattern of the second grating. The temporal intensity changs in the Moire pattern are detected and are used to produce information related to the instantaneous distance and displacement of the diffusely reflective surface from the initial position.

    • Imaging systems and methods for calibrating imaging systems are provided. The imaging system has a body, a scene image capture system that captures images using a taking lens system that can be set to a plurality of different focus distances, and a rangefinder that is capable of determining a distance between the imaging system and at least one portion of a field of view of the talking lens system. The method comprises: automatically capturing a first calibration image of a first field of view through the taking lens system with the taking lens system set to a first focus distance setting; identifying a portion of the first calibration image having a predetermined degree of focus; using the rangefinder to determine a first calibration distance from the imaging device to the identified portion. A focus correlation is determined based upon the first calibration distance and the first focus distance setting.

    • A highly uniform infrared illumination source for illuminating a stripe of a moving sensitized web for line scan imaging of imperfections in the coating on the web by a CCD imaging camera. A light integrator having an elongated housing formed with side and end walls defines a linear light integrating cavity having diffusely reflecting interior wall surfaces. An elongated array of infrared LEDs is spaced along the side wall for emitting light into the cavity for integration within the cavity. A longitudinally extending slit is formed in the side wall through which a diffuse, linear light beam exits the elongated slit having a varying longitudinal intensity profile. The intensity of the light emitted by the LEDs is modulated in an intensity pattern that alters the varying longitudinal intensity profile of the linear light beam to provide a desired longitudinal intensity profile of the stripe of diffuse illumination. Preferably, the intensity modulation renders more uniform the longitudinal intensity profile of the linear light beam illuminating the web as viewed by the imaging camera. The desired light intensity profile along the length of the emitted light beam is achieved by clustering the LEDs with LED drive circuits operated at different drive currents as a function of a set point control signal appropriate to the characteristics of the imaging camera and a transmitted light intensity feedback signal to maintain the intensity pattern of the LEDs and the uniform intensity profile as viewed by the imaging camera regardless of the optical density of the web.

    • An apparatus for imparting a controlled relative displacement of two parallel surfaces along a single axis or along two orthogonal axes is disclosed. Controlled displacement along any axes, orthogonal or otherwise, may be obtained by stacking appropriately oriented single-axis units. The apparatus uses a force-generating means and connecting beams acting in concert to produce a relative displacement of two rigid parallel frames. An imaging means is mounted on one rigid frame and a photosensitive matrix on the other to provide an electro-optical detector system in which the image field may be periodically displaced along a closed trajectory to cover the interstices between the detector elements of the photosensitive matrix. A method for the use of the apparatus to generate electronic picture information is also disclosed.
