    • The present description relates to a method in which a terminal in an idle mode performs network reentry in a wireless access system, wherein the method comprises: a step of receiving, from a base station, control information containing a first parameter and a second parameter for determining a frame in which uplink ranging is to be performed; and a step of performing uplink ranging for network reentry with the base station on the basis of the control information, wherein the first parameter indicates the location of a superframe in which uplink ranging is to be performed, and the second parameter indicates the frame duration in the superframe which is indicated by the first parameter and in which uplink ranging is performed.

    • The present invention relates to an efficient handover (HO) procedure when a base station having a relatively narrow coverage and a macro base station are both present. A method for performing a handover by a mobile station (MS) according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises the steps of: determining the type of a target base station that satisfies the pre-set handover trigger conditions; starting the handover procedure for the target base station when the target base station is a first type base station according to the determined results, and starting a first timer when the target base station is a second type base station having narrower coverage than the first type base station according to the determined results; and determining whether communication with the target base station is possible after the first timer has been completed, if the first timer had been started.

    • The present invention relates to a broadband wireless access system, and more specifically aims to define an efficient handover (HO) procedure when a base station having a relatively narrow coverage, such as femto base station, and a macro base station are both present. A method for allowing a base station to perform coverage loss detection of a mobile station in a broadband wireless access system includes unsolicitedly transmitting a first message wherein a bit for requesting ranging execution is set, to the mobile station, and upon receiving a second message for confirming the ranging from the mobile station prior to expiration of a first timer that begins to operate when the first message is transmitted, restarting operating a second timer established for the mobile station.

    • A method of scanning neighboring target RATs (Radio Access Technology). The method according to one embodiment includes transmitting a message including a field indicating whether or not the mobile station supports the inter-RAT handover while performing a network entry process; transmitting a request for information about another RAT only if the inter-RAT handover is supported by the mobile station; and, in response to the request, receiving information about a recommended RAT from the base station. The information about the recommended RAT is selected based on the location information. The method according to the embodiment further includes performing the scanning of the neighboring target RATs using the information about the recommended RAT; and reporting a result of the scanning. The performing of the scanning is triggered when channel quality falls below a certain threshold. The receiving information is in response to, both, the transmitted message, and the transmitted request.
