SOLUTION: The magnetic storage device having a magnetic recording medium, a driving part for driving the medium in a recording direction, a magnetic head consisting of a recording part and a reproducing part, a means for relatively moving the magnetic head to the medium and a recording and reproducing signal processing means for inputting signals to the magnetic head and reproducing the signals outputted from the magnetic head is characterized in that the reproducing part of the magnetic head is constituted of a magnetoresistance effect magnetic head and the magnetic recording medium has a structure having a magnetic layer formed on a substrate through a multi-layered based layer consisting of a plurality of laminated base layers and at least one layer of the multi-layered base layer consists of a Co containing amorphous or fine crystalline material. Thus, noise is reduced, and a high S/N and a low bit error rate are obtained and the magnetic storage device having a mean failure interval of 300 thousand hours or above at a high recording density of 1G bits per square inch is realized.

SOLUTION: It is desired that in the first substrate, Cr is selected as a main component and the element selected from V, Mo and W is included. In the second substrate, Cr is selected as a main component and the element selected from Ti, Ta, Nb and Zr is included. To be more specific, CoCrNi, CoCrTa and CoCrNiPt alloys are suitable for the first substrate and CrTi, CrTa and CrNb alloys are suitable for the second substrate. In order to maintain a good crystal combination and to prevent the increase in the particle diameters, it is desirable that the film thickness of the first substrate is set to 3 to 10 nm and the film thickness of the second substrate is made >=15 nm.

SOLUTION: A medium is formed by providing a base film 0602 consisting of Cr or an alloy comprising Cr, a magnetic film 0603 consisting of an alloy comprising Co and a protective film 0604 comprising C in turn on a disk like substrate 0601. The magnetic characteristic of this medium makes a ratio of coersive force Hc(⊥) measured by impressing a magnetic field approximately in parallel to the medium surface and in the direction approximately orthogonal to the recording track direction of coersive force Hc(//) measured by impressing the magnetic field in the recording track direction as 1 =2 gigabits.

SOLUTION: This intra-surface magnetic recording medium has a structure obtd. by forming a first magnetic layer 13 via a ground surface layer 12 on a substrate 11, forming an intermediate layer 14 on this first magnetic layer 13 and forming a second magnetic layer 15 on this intermediate layer 14. The coercive force of the first magnetic layer 13 is 100 to 2,000 Oe. The intermediate layer 14 is nonmagnetic or has the saturation magnetization smaller than that of the first magnetic layer 13 and the second magnetic layer 15. All of the first magnetic layer 13, the intermediate layer 14 and the second magnetic layer 15 are composed of crystal grains having substantially a hexagonal close- packed structure. The preferential growth bearings of the crystal grains of the first magnetic layer 13, the crystal grains of the intermediate layer 14 and the crystal grains of the second magnetic layer 15 are equal. The intra-surface magnetic recording medium described above is used. As a result, the high device S/N and low bit error rate are obtd. at the recording density of >=4 giga-bit per square inch and the average fault intervals may be made to >=300,000 hours.

Since Cr attaining high (100) orientation, is used for the 1st underlayer even in a thin film thickness, and the CrTiTa alloy having good lattice matching with the magnetic layer is epitaxial grown on the 1st underlayer, the grain diameter of the magnetic layer is made small and the C-axis in-plane orienting property is enhanced.
