    • 1410937 Electrolytic grinding HITACHI Ltd 19 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971] 58585/72 Heading C7B [Also in Division G3] The feed rate of an electrolytic grinder is controlled to maintain constant the number of sparks obtained between the workpiece and the electrode. In the case where the number of sparks detected is too high then the feed rate is reduced but if no sparks are detected over a given period then the feed rate is increased. Basically a memory circuit 15 stores a binary value that corresponds to the maximum feed rate and when an excessive number of sparks is detected the stored value is reduced to slow the drive motor 19. The sparks are detected by a resonant circuit connected between the grinding wheel 1 and the workpiece 2 and the perturbations of the working current are detected by shunt 5. The peak values of these signals are applied as pulses through AND gates 21 and 22 to a counter 11 for a period defined by the time setting circuit 10. According to the output setting 11b of counter 11 the number of output pulses is reduced by 1/2n. Once an initial delay produced by dead-time setting circuit 12 has elapsed the pulses pass through AND gate 23 into counter 14 for a period determined by time setting circuit 13. The output of counter 14 is reduced by 1/n and these pulses are applied through gate 25 to reduce the value stored in memory circuit 15. The stored value is read at 17 and used to set the speed of motor 19 and thus the feed rate. If no pulses are received during the time setting of circuit 13 a signal is applied to accelerator circuit 16 which provides an increase pulse to memory 15 to increase the feed rate. To facilitate grinding of 'hard' materials the circuit 20 operates on detection of the first spark to sharply reduce the feed rate by lowering the value stored in memory circuit 15. In a modified control arrangement the time taken to change the value stored in memory 15 is shorter when the feed rate is high and this is stated to improve the grinding efficiency.
