    • A liquid crystal display apparatus provided with liquid crystal compensation plates and λ/4 plates on both sides of a liquid crystal cell, in a sequence that the liquid crystal compensation plates, then the λ/4 plates. Further provided is Rth compensation film between the λ/4 plate and linear polarization film. Set substantially at zero is a retardation Rth1 in a perpendicular direction in a range from the linear polarization films to the λ/4 plates, excluding the λ/4 plates. This gives a retardation (in a perpendicular direction) for optically compensating the liquid crystal cell a closer position to the liquid crystal cell. As a result, a broad angle of visibility can be maintained, without losing a balance between viewing angle characteristics from the above position (or the bottom position) and those from the right position (or the left position), while it is possible to prevent contrast ratio in a front direction from being lowered. Therefore, an LCD having good display quality can be realized.

    • A liquid crystal display device is provided with a liquid crystal display element, made up of a pair of electrode substrates and a liquid crystal layer filling a space therebetween; a pair of polarizing plates, one provided on each side of the liquid crystal display element; and at least one optical retardation plate, provided between the liquid crystal display element and one of the polarizing plates. Each optical retardation plate has negative anisotropy of the refractive index, and has an inclined index ellipsoid. In this liquid crystal display device, liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer are aligned in a different direction in each of a plurality of liquid crystal layer divisions of unequal area into which each pixel is divided, and respective extents of variation in response to wavelength of light of (i) anisotropy of the refractive index of the liquid crystal material of the liquid crystal layer and (ii) anisotropy of the refractive index of the optical retardation plate(s) are set to within a range such that viewing-angle-dependent coloring of the liquid crystal screen does not occur.

    • A liquid crystal display device includes: a liquid crystal display element formed by sealing a liquid crystal layer in a space between a pair of light transmitting substrates, the liquid crystal layer being formed by a liquid crystal material so that .DELTA.n.multidot.d that is a product of the index anisotropy .DELTA.n of the liquid crystal material and a thickness d of the liquid crystal layer is more than 300 nm but less than 550 nm; a pair of polarizers disposed on both sides of the liquid crystal display element; and at least one piece of phase-difference plate between the liquid crystal display element and polarizers, wherein three principal refractive indices na, nb and nc of an index ellipsoid are related by na=nc>nb, the direction of one of na and nc is parallel to a surface of the phase-difference plate, and the index ellipsoid is inclined by rotating the direction of nb about an axis that is the direction of na or nc parallel to the surface of the phase-difference plate from a state parallel to a normal direction to the phase-difference plate surface into an inclined state. This structure eliminates a phase difference corresponding to a viewing angle of the liquid crystal display element, and achieves display of high quality images.
