    • A booster steering servomotor having a piston is pressurized and exhausted by a valve having a rotary valve plug within a valve sleeve and coacting flow control grooves wherein means for centering the rotary valve plug and steering mechanism of the vehicle wheels is effected by hydraulic power after a steering operation. Accordingly, little or no resort to axle geometry is required for such purpose thereby saving the energy normally utilized in the steering operation. Such energy expenditure has been necessary to put wheel restoring force in the axle geometry, e.g., due to inclination of king pins. In essence, the components effect rotation of the rotary valve plug during steering return in a direction to pressurize the servomotor pressure chamber which has been previously non-pressurized to bring the steering linkages back to straight ahead steering. The effect is achieved by increasing return bias energy stored in a fluid pressure chamber causing a return of the valve members, when steering force is released, beyond the neutral position for briefly reversely pressurizing the servomotor. The arrangement uses sleeve means having a cam action, which sleeve means are slotted for radial flexibility to take up play in the mechanism assembly.

    • A steering control valve and worm nut centering device for a power steering booster mechanism control valve is provided comprising a flexure rod carried either by the double-acting piston member or the worm nut member and extending between those members or into the valve spool. The overall construction is conventional and well known, the particular feature of the invention being a flexure rod which is adjustable translationally or rotatively, in various modifications, to center the valve spool of the control valve and to center the worm nut. The flexure rod can be predetermined as to length, taper, alloy, and other design factors so as to flex to give a desired increase in road resistance feel substantially over and above that afforded by the usual size of reaction chambers and centering spring conventionally associated with the valve spool. Thus, a flexure characteristic curve of extent of flexure versus degree of steering provides a sharp increase in road resistance simulation as the steering spindle is turned.

    • There is disclosed a control valve arrangement for power steering systems having a servomotor piston which carries a piston valve constructed with a pair of reaction chambers having relief valves and communicating with each other in such a manner as to provide variable resistance against the manual force being applied to a steering wheel which actuates the piston valve. The purpose of thus effecting an automatically varying force is to impart to the vehicle driver a simulated sense of mechanical steering, i.e., simulated road resistance feel, but with a decreasing requirement of force expenditure during vehicle parking operations, or during low speed driving. The construction permits the use of simple parts in a very compact arrangement in which either reaction chamber imparts road resistance feel by being subjected only to servopump inlet pressure while the other is subjected to exhaust pressure. The unbalance of force acts on the piston valve in a direction opposite the manually impressed force. However, both reaction chambers have relief valves, biased closed, but exposed upstream to inlet pressure. Should that pressure exceed a certain limit, the reaction chamber under exhaust pressure will have an inlet pressure feed mixing with exhaust pressure to effect a force opposing the road resistance force of the other reaction chamber. Thus, manual steering effort during parking or driving at slow speeds is decreased even though servomotor pressure may increase.

    • In connection with a servo-assisted steering system with hydraulic servo-assistance for motor vehicles, a steering shaft (15), which is provided with a steering wheel (16), is connected via a torsion spring (14) with an input member of a steering gear (2). An output member of the steering gear (2) is connected with the wheels (11) of the vehicle which are to be steered. In case of a relative rotation of the steering shaft (15) in respect to the input member, two work chambers (12, 13) of a servo motor of a force amplification device can be pressurized by a servo pump via a steering valve with a pressure medium. Two sensors (23, 24) for detecting a rotation angle and/or a torque are arranged on the steering shaft (15), or respectively on the output member of the steering gear (2). After the steering wheel (16) is released following a steering process, the wheels to be steered (11) and the steering gear (2) can be returned with hydraulic assistance. The amount and the direction of the hydraulic servo-assistance, as well as the return of the wheels (11) to be steered, are controlled by means of a common electronically-controlled electromagnetic (18) valve.

A piston valve is inserted in a bore provided in the rotary member. The piston valve is connected with an adjustment device, such as an electromagnet, via a tube supported by a torsion bar. The electromagnet adjusts the piston valve as a function of various influencing variables such as speed, and controls the condition of a plurality of hydraulic fluid flow return bores arranged in longitudinally spaced relation in the rotary member for noise-free control of the build-up of pressure in a surge chamber that is active at the moment. The bores have flat portions of different contours and circumferential lengths.

    • A rotary valve assembly having a valve sleeve and a rotary valve core are provided with flow control grooves having control edges distributed over the peripheries for regulation of pressurized fluid. Such pressure regulation occurs at the control edges forming sets of three gaps in each rotational direction of the steering control valve. One of such gaps forms a relatively deep return flow passage that is fully opened in the neutral position of the valve assembly and two throttle gaps on opposite sides thereof that are relatively shallow for restricted return flow. Rotational displacement of the valve core initially effects pressure regulation through the intermediate deep gap within a low pressure range. Continued rotation of the rotary valve core effects pressure regulation within a high pressure range by return flow through the other gaps conducting restricted flow, to both continue pressure regulation within the high pressure range and suppress hissing noises developed in response to entry of pressurized fluid.

    • A control valve in a power boost steering system uses hydraulic power for wheel straightening after a steering operation wherein a valve spool is reciprocal with a worm shaft which has an end threadedly carrying a non-rotative but slidable collar to compress springs as the worm shaft is rotated by virtue of being keyed against rotation. Thus, rotation of the worm shaft can actuate the collar axially in either direction against oppositely disposed compression springs depending on direction of steering rotation of the worm shaft by a manually operated steering spindle. When manual steering force on the steering spindle is released, the compressed spring expands to axially move the worm shaft and thus the valve spool through a neutral position which exhausts the cylinder chambers. However, the continued expansion of the compressed spring moves the valve spool to a position whereat pressure flow and exhaust of the cylinder chambers is reversed from the original steering direction. This reversal provides hydraulic power to straighten the vehicle wheels to straight ahead position.

    • A booster steering device comprising a combined servomotor and rotary valve control is provided with means for returning the vehicle wheels to a straight ahead position after a steering operation wherein the hydraulic power of the servomotor is utilized for such return movement. The effect is achieved by a cam means actuated by manual steering force to add neutral return energy by twist of a torque rod over and beyond the stress necessary to return the control valve components to a neutral position. It has been found that such overstress results in an overtravel in relative motion of the flow control valve members in returning to neutral position, i.e., overtravel beyond neutral position, briefly. This occurs upon release of a steering force at the hand wheel. As a result of such overtravel, pressure flow to the servomotor is reversed from the direction in which it was going during the terminated steering operation and the servomotor powers the vehicle wheels to stright ahead position. Resiliency is provided in the cam means through a slotted coupling sleeve between the torque rod and a valve component, which stabilizes the construction and compensates for radial play and clearances between connected elements. Means are provided to adjustably position the coupling sleeve and preset the neutral position of the valve members.

    • A conventional power steering cylinder and valve assembly of the kind having a steering spindle and a torsion rod between relatively rotative valve members is provided with a steering resistance simulating means in the form of a tubular piston that surrounds the torsion rod and axially abuts the manually rotated portion of the steering spindle through a rotation resisting cam device. The reaction piston is axially movable but splined to the torsion rod in a manner to prevent rotation, and subjected to axial pressure force to thus resist manual rotation of the steering spindle. Manual force is exerted to act through the cam device to effect axial movement of the reaction piston against the pressure force thereon to achieve a steering resistance simulation. A particular feature resides in optional use of the reaction piston in an otherwise known cylinder and valve construction, depending on market choice.
