    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assemble a lamination-type gas detection element into a housing at a specific position accurately without damaging it. SOLUTION: Double (inner and outer) holders 3 and 4 for fixing a lamination- type gas detection element 2 to a housing are provided. The inner holder 3 is constituted of a pair of semi-split members and holes the gas detection element 2 from both surfaces 2a. A recessed part 201 is formed on a surface 2a and a projecting part 32 is formed on a semi-split surface 3a of the inner holder 3, this positioning the gas detection element 2 into the inner holder 3. A seat part 41a for receiving the inner holder 3 is provided at the inner wall of the upper holder 4 that is adhered and fixed to the housing and the inner holder 3 is positioned at the outer holder 4. The inner holder 3 pinches the gas detection element 2, thereby, a force for pressing the inner holder 3 in upper and lower directions does not act on the engagement part of the above recessed part 201 and the projecting part 32.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a crack from being generated easily due to thermal shock by laminating a solid electrolyte substrate with oxygen ion conductivity and providing a different type of layer with a specific thickness on the interface between the substrates. SOLUTION: Five solid electrolyte substrates 11-15 with oxygen ion conductivity are laminated. A 50 μm thick different kind of layer 10 is provided at an interface being formed between the substrates 11-15. The sintered particle diameter of the different types of layer 10 ranges from 3 to 4 μm on average and the sintered particle diameter of the solid electrolyte substrates 11-15 ranges from 2 to 3 μm on average. The solid electrolyte substrates 11-15 consist of yttria partial stabilization zirconia and the different type of layer 10 consists of α-alumina. When a small crack based on thermal stress or stress is generated in the solid electrolyte substrates 11-15, the branching of stress or small crack is generated in the different kind of layer 10 with this kind of configuration, thus stopping the growth of crack.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air-fuel ratio sensing element of high precision having a high responsiveness. SOLUTION: The air-fuel ratio sensing element concerned is composed of a pump cell 11 having pump electrode 110, a sensor cell 12 having sensor electrode 120, and a chamber 130 at least whose two surfaces are covered by the cells 11, 12. The chamber 130 is equipped with 2-5 communication holes 2 having the same diameter to introduce gas to be measured, and each hole 2 is configured so that a projected image 20 of the hole 20 is formed on the surface where the sensor electrode 120 is formed and confronting the chamber 13. When a straight line is assumed passing the center of each hole projection image 20 and the center of gravity 121 of the sensor electrode 120 on the plane confronting the chamber 130 of the sensor cell 12, a plurality of such straight lines constitute a divisional plane in which the sensor electrode 120 is divided into a plurality of segments, wherein the area of each divisional plane is equal.
