摘要： Optical microcavities (12) based on two dimensional arrays of holes (14,18) defined in photonic crystals (10) are optimized for maximum Q factors and minimum mode volume. They can also be used for strong coupling between the cavity field and an atom trapped within a defect of the photonic crystals (10), or for tunable filters if the holes are filled with electro-optical polymers. In one embodiment the Q factor of a cavity is increased by elongation of a plurality of holes in at least one row in a predetermined direction. Modal structures of microcavities, as well as quality factors, mode volumes, symmetry properties and radiation patterns of localized defect modes as a function of the slab thickness and parameters of photonic crystal (10) and defects are illustrated.

摘要： A compact, electrically and optically pumped multi-wavelength nanocavity laser, modulator and detector array uses lithography to define the precise spectral response of each element. High fields are applied within optical nanocavities to take advantage of photonic crystals filled with nonlinear materials. These nonlinearities and high fields are used to define tunable nanocavity laser, detectors, routers, gates and spectrometers for wavelength and time division multiplexing applications. Similarly, nonofabricated optical waveguides can be used for efficient coupling of light between devices. The lithographic control over the wavelength and polarization supported within photonic crystal cavities is used to construct compact nanophotonic laser and detector arrays, and all-optical gates and routes. The photonic crystal couples light emitted one cavity, and uses it to topically pump another with negligible diffraction losses. The emission wavelength of light from these photonic crystal lasers can be varied by simple adjustments of the lithographic pattern during their fabrication.

摘要： A system, method and apparatus provide the ability to detect a chemical in an analyte. To detect the chemical, the invention utilizes a laser having an open cavity. A photonic crystal lattice structure having a defect defines a suitable geometry for such a cavity (1000). The analyte is introduced directly into a high optical field of the cavity (1002). Thereafter, the cavity is pumped (1004) and an emission from the laser is used to detect the presence of the chemical (1006) in the analyte.

摘要： The invention is a method for fabricating molecular filters which can separate objects approximately 1-5 nm in range, where the filtration size is controlled by using thin films of materials and technologies to form a filtration channel or pore in a middle thin film layer in a multilayered structure. Lithography is used to define two offset arrays of blind holes into the opposing sides of a multi-layer membrane. The blind holes extend across a thin central filtration layer. A selective etch is used to attack the filtration layer to form a communicating channel between the two holes. The only connection between one side of the filter and the other is through the channel in the filter layer, whose thickness, d, determines the largest size object which can traverse the filter.

摘要： The invention is directed to a method of fabricating sub-wavelength features in semiconductors and insulators by starting with optical lithography patterns defined in a resist and then employing shadow-evaporation and directional etching to define nanoscale features. The directionality of this process is used together with a carefully defined photoresist mask to define an ion etching mask which allows the formation of very narrow trenches adjacent to the photoresist regions. Such narrow trenches can be used for electrical device isolation, for the definition of very small flow channels, and for the deposition of very narrow electrical contacts and wires.
