      SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises the toner carrier roller 31 including a plurality of electrodes, not shown, arranged in the rotating direction, and an AC power source 59 for generating an electric field on the surface of the toner carrier roller 31 by applying a voltage to the plurality of electrodes. The image forming apparatus causes toner supplied to the rotating surface of the toner carrier roller 31 to hop on the roller surface by means of the electric field and, simultaneously, conveys the toner to the place opposite a photoreceptor 58 by the rotation of the roller surface, thereby attaching the toner to the latent image on the photoreceptor 58. In the image forming apparatus, the AC power source 59 used here is the one that brings the surface potential of the toner carrier roller 31 to a value between the potential of the latent image on the photoreceptor 58 and the potential of the base of the photoreceptor 58 by applying the voltage.

The length of the area where heat is transmitted to a sheet S, defined by the opposite extending faces, can be altered according to a contact/separation state.
