    • An automatic power control system, a down sampling circuit and a down sampling method. The automatic power control system is incorporated in an optical disc drive comprising a laser diode for receiving a control signal to generate a laser beam; and a photodetector for detecting the laser beam to generate an analog input signal. The automatic power control system comprises an analog-to-digital converter, a down sampling circuit, a comparator, and a digital-to-analog converter. The analog-to-digital converter converts the analog input signal to digital data. The down sampling circuit, coupled to the analog-to-digital converter, comprises a down sampler, a counter, and a controller. The down sampler receives a predetermined amount of digital data to generate representation data. The counter, coupled to the down sampler, calculates the amount of digital data, and resets the down sampler when the amount equals or exceeds the predetermined count. The controller, coupled to the counter, disables the counter when the digital data is invalid. The comparator, coupled to the down sampling circuit, compares the representation data with predetermined target data to generate error data. The digital-to-analog converter, coupled to the comparator, converts the error data to analog to generate the control signal.

    • A method for controlling the recording speed of a multi-layered optical disc divides a multi-layered optical disc into a plurality of zones with each zone having a corresponding recording speed. It is then determined which zones need the recording speed to be reduced according to the quality of the optical disc. When the optical drive records data onto an inferior quality zone, it reduces the recording speed to guarantee the reliability of recorded data and enhance recording quality. When the optical drive records data on the next recording layer and has passed the zone that corresponds to the inferior quality zone of the previous recording layer, it increases the recording speed. Thereby the method ensures both quality and efficiency. Furthermore, the recording speed of each subsequent zone of the next recording layer corresponds to the recording speed of each previous zone of the recording layer.

    • The specification discloses a braking method for a single-phase motor, which is applied to a single-phase DC brushless motor driven by a three-phase motor driving IC. The invention uses a control unit to compute the rotational speed of the single-phase motor according to a rotation number signal generated by the motor rotational axis. When the rotational speed is below a threshold, the motor driving IC is controlled to stop rotating the single-phase motor. Through the single-phase motor braking method disclosed herein, the problem of unable to determine the rotational direction of a single-phase motor within a three-phase motor driving IC existing in the prior art can be solved by merely modifying the program in the control unit without adding system elements. Since currently the single-phase DC brushless motor and the three-phase motor driving IC have competitive superiority in prices, if the three-phase motor driving IC can directly drive the single-phase DC brushless motor without requiring additional system elements the whole system cost can be lower. On the other hand, this method can avoid the delay problem due to fewer single-phase motor driving IC manufacturers on the market.
