    • A process for producing a magnetic recording medium is provided, the medium being formed from a non-magnetic flexible support, a non-magnetic layer comprising a non-magnetic powder and a binder, and a magnetic layer comprising a ferromagnetic powder and a binder. The non-magnetic layer is provided on top of the support, the magnetic layer is provided on top of the non-magnetic layer, and the non-magnetic powder includes two or more types of non-magnetic powder, including carbon black and a non-magnetic powder other than carbon black. The process includes a step of separately dispersing a non-magnetic liquid A that includes a binder and a non-magnetic powder other than carbon black, and a non-magnetic liquid B that includes carbon black and a binder, and a step of stirring and mixing the non-magnetic liquid A and the non-magnetic liquid B to prepare a non-magnetic coating solution.

    • The present invention aims to provide a magnetic recording medium capable of high-density recording with excellent running durability and preservability as well as a magnetic recording medium capable of high-density recording with low noise even at high output and excellent running durability. Disclosed are a magnetic recording medium comprises a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder provided on a nonmagnetic flexible substrate and a magnetic recording medium comprising a nonmagnetic layer containing a nonmagnetic powder and a binder and a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder provided in this order on a nonmagnetic flexible substrate. Provided that said magnetic layer contains a zirconia powder having an average primary particle diameter of 0.005-0.2 &mgr;m, or said magnetic layer has an average thickness in the range of 0.04-0.3 &mgr;m, said ferromagnetic powder is a metal alloy powder having a as of 130 A.m2/kg or more, and said magnetic layer contains a granulated powder having an average primary particle diameter of 0.005-0.2 &mgr;m and a specific gravity of 5 or more.

    • The present invention provides a magnetic recording medium exhibiting a high C/N ratio as well as having excellent running durability even under high-density magnetic recording. Disclosed is a magnetic recording medium comprising, on either side of a flexible nonmagnetic support, a nonmagnetic layer containing a nonmagnetic powder and a binder and a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder in this order, having an average thickness of said magnetic layer of from 0.01 to 0.3 &mgr;m and a total average thickness of said magnetic layer and said nonmagnetic layer of from 0.1 to 1.0 &mgr;m, characterized in that the number of projections having a height equal to or higher than 20 nm on the magnetic layer surface measured with AFM (Atomic Force Microscope) is equal to or less than 100 pieces per 30 &mgr;m×30 &mgr;m square as well as the PSD (Power Spectrum Density) of the magnetic layer surface measured with the AFM is equal to or less than 0.2 nm2 in the wavelength of from of 1 to 5 &mgr;m.

    • A magnetic recording medium includes at least one magnetic layer formed by dispersing a ferromagnetic powder in a binder, the ferromagnetic powder including at least one kind of rare earth metal element selected from Y or metal elements of lanthanide series and being constituted of acicular ferromagnetic alloy powder particles whose .sigma. s is in the range of 120 to 160 emu/g, whose average longitudinal axis length is in the range of 0.04 to 0.2 .mu.m and whose crystallite size is in the range of 100 to 300 angstroms, the magnetic layer including an abrasive agent whose average particle diameter is in the range of 0.03 to 0.3 .mu.m and containing carbon black having an average particle diameter of 50 to 300 m.mu.. The magnetic recording medium has an excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics and, particularly, a good preservation capability and can prevent a magnetic head from being abraded.
