    • The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for encoding/decoding a motion vector by selecting a set of predicted candidate motion vectors, and a method and apparatus for image encoding/decoding using the same. The method for encoding a motion vector according to the present invention comprises: selecting one set of predicted candidate motion vectors among plural sets of predicted candidate motion vectors by using information about motions of neighboring blocks of a current block; selecting one of the predicted candidate motion vectors in the selected set of predicted candidate motion vectors as a predicted motion vector; encoding a differential vector which represents the difference between the current motion vector as a motion vector of the current block and the predicted motion vector being selected; and encoding a predicted motion vector index that represents the predicted motion vector being selected. According to the present invention, as a motion vector is encoded by selecting an efficient set of predicted candidate motion vectors, the magnitude of a differential vector to be encoded can be reduced without necessarily encoding additional information to indicate which set of predicted candidate motion vectors has been selected. In result, the compression efficiency of a motion vector and further the compression efficiency of an image can be improved.

    • One embodiment of the present invention relates to a technique for encoding a multi-plane image, which adaptively determines the order of encoding planes in accordance with the characteristics of an inputted image, and encodes the multi-plane image. An apparatus for encoding a multi-plane image comprises: a plane encoding order determining unit which adaptively determines, on the basis of encoding costs, the order of encoding a plurality of color planes inputted by a predetermined unit; and an encoding unit which encodes the plurality of color planes, inputted by the predetermined unit, in accordance with the determined order. The apparatus of the present invention adaptively determines the order of encoding planes in accordance with the characteristics of an inputted image, and encodes the multi-plane image, and therefore provides further improved encoding efficiency as compared to conventional apparatuses which encode images in a fixed order, and provides further improved encoding efficiency, particularly when predictions on the planes are performed.

The present invention provides an image-encoding method which involves encoding images of encoding units in accordance with a plurality of encoding schemes contained in an encoding toolset, selects one encoding scheme from among the plurality of encoding schemes for each of the encoding units, outputs image data encoded in accordance with the selected encoding scheme, stores the frequency of selection of the encoding scheme selected for each of the encoding units, determines whether or not to update the encoding toolset on the basis of the frequency of selection of the encoding scheme and/or the encoding cost for the selected encoding scheme, and updates the encoding toolset.
