    • A dental abutment (10) forms an abutment post (13) having a trans-mucosal base portion (11) and a supra-gingival portion having a smaller transverse external cross section than the proximal end of the base portion. The supra-gingival portion forms a through bore threaded at its proximal end (20) and stepped to form an internal shoulder (16) for seating the head of a screw for attaching the abutment post to the implant. The exterior surface of the abutment post forms a generally polygonal transverse cross section for receiving hollow components having interior surfaces that can be telescoped over the abutment post. The abutment post is used in an abutment system that includes a healing cap (30), an impression coping (40) and/or a prosthesis coping (60) forming an interior surface that can be telescoped over the supra-gingival portion of the abutment post. The opposed surfaces of the abutment post and the coping preferably have truncated corners (13b) that are very close to each other to maintain a coaxial relationship between the post and the coping, while the portions of the opposed surfaces adjacent to the truncated corners are spaced farther apart to permit limited angular movement of the post and coping relative to each other, and to permit the entry of dental cement between the opposed surfaces.

    • A system for making anatomically correct and aesthetically pleasing dental restorations, including a modelling structure for fashioning a custom-made impression coping and a method of using the model to form said impression coping. A healing abutment used in second stage surgery to form an opening in the gingiva of a dental patient is attached to an implant analog within the model. Impression material is poured into the modelling receptacle around the healing abutment so as to form a model of the patient's gingival layer, including a cavity in the model corresponding to the opening in the patient's gingival layer. A narrow coping shaft is attached to the implant analog within the modelling receptacle, and a modelling material is poured into the cavity and allowed to harden around the narrow coping shaft, thus forming an impression coping with a transmucosal section replicating the size and shape of the healing abutment. The impression coping may thereafter be connected to a dental implant in the patient's jawbone (after removal of the healing abutment) so that an impression may be taken in the usual manner to be used in making a stone model of the surgery site, which in turn may be used in fashioning an artificial tooth.

    • A set of components are set forth which efficiently deliver a dental implant (10) to a site at which the implant is to be installed in living jawbone. The implant has a gingival end with a manipulating fitting (16), and a threaded bore (18) extending inwardly from the gingival end. The set of components includes a carrier device (12) having an upper end, a lower end, a through bore (20) extending between the lower and upper ends, and a fitting (24) for mating with the manipulating fitting of the implant. The through bore in the region adjacent to the upper end includes a non-circular socket (25) for receiving an implant/insertion tool (40) that imparts movement to the carrier device and the implant. The set of components further includes a screw (14) for attaching said carrier device to said implant. The screw has a lower threaded portion (30) for engaging the threaded bore of the implant, and a head (28) for stopping on a shoulder (22) within the through bore of the carrier device. The set may further include an impression coping (120) which attaches to the carrier, and allows the clinician to take an impression of the site immediately after installing the implant.
