    • A positive thermistor device used in a motor activating circuit device of a refrigerator for example includes a positive thermistor element having a pair of opposed electrodes, each of which receives compressive force elastically applied from a corresponding one of spring contact members to hold the thermistor element at a predefined position in the device. When the thermistor device is destroyed, the element breaks into fragments, some of which remain in contact with the spring contact members. The remaining fragments deviate in position to ensure that they do not conduct electricity, resulting in an open state, wherein any current flow is inhibited through such fragments. More specifically, a positive thermistor disk is held within the device so that it is interposed between conductive spring contact pieces and insulative position-alignment projections, which are cross-diagonally situated with respect to each other. The spring contact pieces are located further toward the periphery of the disk than the position-alignment projections, causing a spring force to extend in a direction generally outward relative to a direction perpendicular to the planes of the electrodes. In one embodiment, the position-alignment projections have cut-away portions at outer tip ends thereof respectively to further promote the formation of an open circuit state upon the occurrence of malfunction.

    • A method and apparatus for providing a more reliable protection device and an improved PIC power integrated switch. Accordingly, the over-temperature status of the switch as well as the overcurrent status of each of a plurality of ports of the switch are detected. If there is over-temperature, ports with the overcurrent status are identified as a potential cause. These ports are then switched off. After a predetermined waiting time period during which the switch temperature is expected to decrease, the over-temperature status of the switch is again checked. If the over-temperature disappears, then the ports with non-overcurrent status remain on. However, if the over-temperature persists, then all of the ports are turned off. The improved PIC switch thus increases the dynamic operation range of the conventional PIC switch, while ensuring normal operations.

    • The present invention provides a two-terminal, transistor-PTC, circuit protection device that has a reduced size and weight and is particularly suitable for use, for example, in portable electronic devices and high density electronic circuits. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a circuit protection device comprises a positive coefficient temperature (PTC) element and a bipolar transistor having base, collector, and emitter terminals. The PTC element is connected between the base and collector terminals of the transistor. The PTC element may be thermally coupled to the transistor and packaged with the transistor as a hybrid device. An electrical load may be connected to the collector terminal of the transistor. According to another embodiment of the present invention, a circuit protection device comprises a PTC element and a Darlington circuit having base, collector and emitter terminals. The PTC element is connected between the base and collector terminals of the Darlington circuit. The PTC element may be thermally coupled to the Darlington circuit and packaged with the Darlington circuit as a hybrid device. An electrical load may be connected to the collector terminal of the Darlington circuit. The Darlington circuit may also be a complementary Darlington circuit.

    • A novel motor driver with an active snubber circuit. The motor driver is interposed between an external electrical power source and an electrical motor. The electrical motor is driven in first and second states such that the electrical motor produces an inductive flyback current when it switches torque direction. The motor driver comprises a reverse voltage protector in series between the power source and the electrical motor allowing flow of electrical power to the motor; and a capacitor arranged in parallel circuit with the motor between the motor and the diode (or other reverse voltage protector). The active snubber circuit is in parallel circuit with the motor between the diode and the electrical motor. The active snubber circuit comprises a switch having a sensor responsive to increases in the bus voltage resulting from the inductive flyback current and a resistor in series with the switch regulating electrical current flow.
