    • A mineral cutting tool comprises a head and a shank extending therefrom for fitting into a socket of a box, the shank having a laterally extending, two-part aperture, the parts thereof communicating with one another, with the first aperture part housing a first portion of a resiient retaining member whereby the latter is secured to the shank, the second aperture part housing, with clearance, a second portion of the resilient retaining member, which second portion is flexibly connected to the first portion, the second portion projecting at least from one end of the second aperture part for abutting engagement, in use, with the socket of the box.

    • A mineral cutting pick of the type having a non-circular shank extending from a body for fitting non-rotatably in a socket in a pick box, the shank being recessed adjacent the end remote from the body and housing therein resilient means with projections extending from opposite sides of the shank, the projections being provided with lead-in surfaces adjacent the end of the shank remote from the body, whereby when the end of the shank remote from the body is pushed into the socket in a pick box the projections are depressed sufficiently to enable the shank to be inserted fully into the box, and part of one or both projections may spring into a cutaway extending from one or both sides of the socket at the end of the pick box remote from the body of the pick inserted therein.

    • A cutter device for use with mining machines and consisting of a cutter member having a shank and a head portion extending generally transversely of the shank and a holder member with a recess in which the shank is received. The shank has a depression which locates a locking pin used to secure the cutter member to the holder member. The head portion of the cutter member has a cutting edge at one end and a projection at the opposite end. The holder member has a tapered neck extending upwardly from a wall surface penetrated by the recess to engage the projection and provide a support for the cutter member. The cutter member has a transition portion between the shank and the head portion and this portion has a surface co-extensive with a surface of the shank which surfaces engage similarly co-extensive surfaces of the neck and the interior of the recess. A shoulder can be formed beneath the cutting edge and spaced from an abutment surface on the holder member.

    • A mining bit with a cylindrical shank has a support block with a longitudinal bore therethrough for receiving a bushing of hard material. The shank is rotatably received in the bushing. The bit is held from axial movement and the bushing from axial and rotational movement by means of a single keeper. The keeper has a body portion which is received in a transverse bore in the block and a matching opening in the bushing. The keeper also has a protuberance which extends into a circumferential groove in the bit shank. The protuberance is depressible to move it out of the groove.
