    • A coin separator/rejector system includes a plurality of coin races which are disposed in a compact coin receiver body. The races have at least one protrusion along their length so as to deflect downwardly traveling coins and force these coins to alter both their attitude and direction of travel to encounter apertures formed in the receiver body between successive coin races. Coins of a selected diameter travel downwardly along any given coin race for ultimate deposit or credit. Coins of less than the selected diameter are directed into an alternative direction and path of travel along an alternate or secondary race where they are either credited or rejected.

    • Discrimination between two coin-denomination (Xp, Yp) of equal diameter but different thicknesses, is made in a coin-sorter by sweeping the coins round an annular plate (10) in abutment with the inner edge (13) of an upstanding rim (11) which in the region of a sizing aperture (143) for receiving the thinner denomination (Xp) is undercut to admit coins of that denomination, but not of the other, thicker denomination (Yp), into abutment with an outer auxiliary edge (17) such that only coins of the thinner denomination (Xp) will be accepted within the diametral threshold set for that aperture (143) from the auxiliary edge (17). The thicker coins (Yp), because they abut the undercut edge (13), lie outside this threshold but are accepted within the same threshold set from that edge (13) at the next aperture (144). In another sorter coins are tipped from an inclined and slotted shoulder (30) by deflectors (35 to 37) depending upon diametral thresholds set from the top (38) of the shoulder (30) or the bottom (40) of the slot (39) according to coin thickness, whereas in other apparatus discrimination is made photoelectroni cally in response to coins which run along different rails (60, 61) according to their thicknesses (or other characteristics).

    • There are many occasions when it is required to sort a mixed lot of coins into their several denominations and when such a sort is carried out it is important that provision be made for distinguishing not only real coins of the required type one from another but also for differentiating both between these real coins and forgeries. The actual sorting - the physical separation of each denomination from the others - can be accomplished in a variety of ways, and two of the most common involve one or other of what are known as disc sorters and ramp sorters; unfortunately, for either a disc or ramp sorter not merely to sort but also to distinguish between proper and improper coins the equipment is inevitably extremely bulky. The present invention seeks to overcome this size and weight problem, and indeed to provide a technically rather more effective apparatus, by proposing a sorter which combines the facilities of both a disc and a ramp sorter. More specifically, the invention suggests a coin sorter (10) having both a disc (11) and a ramp (12), the disc being to gather the coins (14) from an associated feed hopper (15) and to deliver them to the ramp (12) via one or more detector station (16, 17) at which one or more of the coin's physical parameters is measured to determine whether the coin is proper or improper (and, if proper, very preferably what denomination it is), and the ramp (12) being in effect simply to separate the coins (14) into their various size-defined denominations and feed them to the appropriate delivery chutes (17).

    • A coin discrimination apparatus and method is provided. Coins, preferably after cleaning, e.g. using a trommel, are singulated by a coin pickup assembly configured to reduce jamming. A coin rail assists in providing separation between coins as they travel past a sensor. The sensor provides an oscillating electromagnetic field generated on a single sensing core. The oscillating electromagnetic field is composed of one or more frequency components. The electromagnetic field interacts with a coin, and these interactions are monitored and used to classify the coin according to its physical properties. All frequency components of the magnetic field are phase-locked to a common reference frequency. The phase relationships between the various frequencies are fixed, and the interaction of each frequency component with the coin can be accurately determined without the need for complicated electrical filters. In one embodiment, a sensor having a core, preferably ferrite, which is curved, such as in a U-shape or in the shape of a section of a torus, and defining a gap, is provided with a wire winding for excitation and/or detection. The sensor can be used for simultaneously obtaining data relating to two or more parameters of a coin or other object, such as size and conductivity of the object. Two or more frequencies can be used to sense core and/or cladding properties. Objects recognized as acceptable coins, using the sensor data, are diverted by a controllable deflecting door, to tubes for delivery to acceptable coin bins.
