Automatic speed control; pneumatic trans. mission.-The speed of engines, particularly for motor vehicles, is regulated by means of a throttling device controlling the supply of mixture to the engine and displaceable in a member on the mixture conduit with sufficient play to allow engine suction to act on both sides of the device, the suction on one side being modified by one or more speed regulators which admit air or gas to conduits leading to the device. One such regulator may be placed on the engine shaft and another on the propeller shaft beyond the changespeed gear. Fig. 3 shows a throttling device consisting of a plunger a, which is.formed at its lower end as a throttle e controlling the mixture conduit c and is acted on at its upper end by the engine suction and by air or gas admitted by connections g to the speed governors. When the higher speed gears are in use, the governor on the propeller shaft has a controlling action on the plunger, and for lower speed gears the governor on the engine shaft. Fig. 6 shows a form of centrifugal governor in which balls h sliding in slots i act on a conical sleeve D which, through a lever q, s opens a valve v to admit air to a pipe E leading to the plunger a, Fig. 3. The tension of the spring w acting on the valve v is adjusted by means of a screwed cap d . The sleeve D, instead of being formed with conical surfaces engaging the balls, may have curved surfaces shaped to give the desired result. The plunger a may be replaced by a plate I, Fig. 5, pivoted at B' and subjected to the engine suction so as to actuate a throttle K . Hand-controlled valves may be provided in the connections between the throttle device and the governors. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Act states also that the throttling device may be a diaphragm. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
