    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a videoconferencing system which compensates for different audio clocks between devices using an ultrasonic beacon.SOLUTION: The videoconferencing system has a videoconferencing unit which can use portable devices as peripherals for the system. The portable devices obtain near-end audio and transmit the audio to the videoconferencing unit via a wireless connection. Then, the videoconferencing unit transmits the near-end audio received from the loudest portable device along with near-end video to the far-end. The portable devices can control the videoconferencing unit and can initially establish the videoconference by connecting with the far-end and then transferring operations to the videoconferencing unit. To deal with acoustic coupling between the unit's loudspeaker and the portable device's microphone, the unit uses an echo canceller which compensates for differences in the clocks used in the A/D and D/A converters of the loudspeaker and microphone.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a keyboard arrangement which are more inexpensive by reducing the number of signal lines.
      SOLUTION: The keyboard arrangement comprises a plurality of keys and a keyboard decoder. Each of the plurality of keys includes at least one drive contact and a plurality of sense contacts. Each drive contact can be connected to an output (drive) line of the keyboard decoder, and each sense contact can be connected to an input (sense) line of the keyboard decoder such that each key is connected to a unique combination of sense lines. Key presses can be identified by the unique combination of sense lines triggered. The combination of sense lines triggered can be used as an address to a lookup table indicating the function of the various keys. Variations of drive signal properties (e.g., frequency, phase, and waveshape) can be used to further distinguish key inputs and/or provide for a greater number of keys and/or corresponding functions.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for preparing video conference images. SOLUTION: An endpoint has a wide screen display, and the disclosed system creates an image with an aspect ratio of about 16:9 for the endpoint. The image is altered or modified to change the aspect ratio to about 4:3. In one embodiment, two portions can be added to the image to increase the overall height of the image. The wide screen display is set to a zoom mode and capable of substantially displaying the image without added portions. Alternatively, the image is stretched along its height by a factor of 4/3. The wide screen display is set to the wide mode and capable of substantially displaying the image without the stretched height. The disclosed system and method can receive signals that the endpoint has a wide screen display and can also inform a user at the endpoint to set the wide screen display to the wide or zoom modes.
