    • A rack shaft is supported in an inner peripheral portion of a tubular housing of a gear housing via a rack bush. An inner peripheral portion of the rack bush is formed as a peripheral surface approximately similar to a circle in which a peripheral surface constituted by a large circular arc and a peripheral surface constituted by a small circular arc are continuously provided. The rack shaft is not in contact with the peripheral surface constituted by the large circular arc, and the peripheral surface constituted by the small circular arc is formed as a support portion of the rack shaft. The support of the rack shaft by the peripheral surface constituted by the small circular arc is not accomplished when a load applied to the rack shaft is nothing or low, but is accomplished when the load is high. Further, an engaging convex portion acting as a positioning and rotation prevention for the bush is provided in an outer peripheral portion of the rack bush.

    • An anodized coating suitable for formation of highly regulated pores is provided. A method for production of a structure having pores characterized by including the steps of: forming starting points at predetermined intervals in an aluminum alloy formed on a substrate, and forming pores by anodization with the starting points as origins. In another embodiment, first and second aluminum alloy layers are anodized to form pores penetrating into the layers, wherein a diameter of a pore in the first alloy is different from a diameter of a pore in the second alloy. In an additional embodiment, a substrate is anodized to form pores, wherein the substrate contains an additive which changes the diameter within each pore, the amount of the additive continuously changing along the direction perpendicular to the substrate.

    • A lead for use in a rotary electric machine such as an automotive engine starter. The lead includes a tube having formed on an end thereof a grommet to be secured to the machine and a stranded conductor disposed within the tube to have an end portion extending inside the machine through a hole of the grommet. The tube has a seal which is interference fit on the stranded conductor, while the stranded conductor is not interference fit on the stranded conductor. This permits the grommet to be pushed by a decreased pressure while flexing or compressing the tube in a lengthwise direction thereof thereby exposing more area of the end portion of the stranded conductor when welded to, for example, a motor terminal within the machine.

    • A starting apparatus for starting an engine has a drive motor and a reduction gear. The reduction gear includes a shock absorbing member and restricting members. The shock absorbing member is provided to elastically receive a reaction force exerted to an internal gear. The restricting members are provided to restrict a compressed amount of the shock absorbing member by making contact with each other. When bringing into contact with each other, the restricting members make contact at the outside diameter portions thereof. Accordingly, unpleasant noise generated during the operation of the starting apparatus is reduced by the shock absorbing member. Further, the damage to respective parts is reduced.
