    • A ringed coolant water passage 16 formed to surround a plurality of cylinders #1-#4 is provided. Two partitioning members having a larger thermal expansion coefficient as compared to that of a cylinder block 10, and separating the ringed coolant water passage 16 into first passage 22 and second passage 24 is provided. The first passage 22 exists mainly at one side of a longitudinal bore center plane which extends along the longitudinal direction of the cylinder block 10 while the second passage 24 exists mainly at the other side. An inlet which communicates with the first passage and an outlet which communicates with the second passage are provided. A cylinder head including a coolant water passage which opens to both of the first passage 22 and the second passage 24 is attached to the cylinder block 10. The cylinder block 10 and the partitioning members 12, 14 are formed so that stress acting between both of them in a condition where the internal combustion engine is warmed up does not reach to a breaking stress of the partitioning members 12, 14.

    • A first coolant flow passage (31, 32) is provided to extend in a longitudinal direction of a cylinder head (101). In at least one of cross sections perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, the first coolant flow passage (31, 32) is located between a flat plane (S1) including central axes of a plurality of combustion chambers (4) and parallel to the longitudinal direction and a central line plane (S2) including central lines of a plurality of intake ports (2). In at least one of cross sections perpendicular to the longitudinal direction, at least a portion (20c) of a second coolant flow passage is located between a cylinder block mating surface (la) of the cylinder head (101) and the intake port central line plane (S2). A coolant at a temperature lower than that of a coolant flowing in the second coolant flow passage (20c) flows in the first coolant flow passage (31, 32).

    • Two different systems of cooling water channels are provided in a cylinder block. The cooling water at a relatively low temperature is made to flow through a first cooling water channel, while the cooling water at a relatively high temperature is made to flow through a second cooling water channel. The first cooling water channel includes an exhaust-side water jacket that is located on an exhaust side with respect to a plurality of cylinders juxtaposed in a longitudinal direction of the cylinder block and is provided in the longitudinal direction along the plurality of cylinders. The second cooling water channel includes an intake-side water jacket that is located on an intake side with respect to the plurality of cylinders and is provided in the longitudinal direction along the plurality of cylinders.
