    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ion generator which can efficiently generate a positive ion and a negative ion, and at the same time, can freely control the ion generating amount, and to provide an ion generator which can provide an excellent sterilization effect to, e.g., airborne microbes in air, and an air conditioner using the ion generator. SOLUTION: For this ion generator, a discharge electrode and a counter electrode which face each other sandwiching a dielectric substance are provided. To the discharge electrode, a voltage having a wave form which varies with time by repeating a unit waveform in either range of positive or negative with the counter electrode as a reference, and a voltage having another wave form which varies with time by repeating the unit waveform in a range of an opposite polarity from the first voltage are alternately applied, and the ion generator is constituted in a manner to generate both of the positive ion and the negative ion.
