    • In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for providing a short messaging service for a device to enable communication of a short message over an Internet Protocol (IP) network, the device adapted to access a telecommunications system communicatively coupled to the IP network, the IP network comprising one or more network nodes, the method comprising: subscribing to an attachment notification, the attachment notification indicating that the device has attached to the telecommunications system and is contactable for communication, said subscribing being performed by a network element communicatively coupled between the device and the one or more network nodes; receiving, at the network element, the attachment notification when the device has attached to the telecommunications system, the attachment notification comprising identification information for the device; and registering the device with at least one of the one or more network nodes for communication of short messages over the IP network, said registering being performed by the network element based on at least some of the identification information received in the attachment notification.

    • An improvements to Handover is provided. A method of assisting handover of a user equipment from a first radio access network to a second radio access network, the second radio access network being coupled to a mobility controller and having an association with the first radio access network, the user equipment being capable of communication with a session transfer controller by use of the first and second radio access networks comprises the steps od receiving a first message at the mobility controller from the first radio access network requesting handover of the user equipment to the second radio access network, sending a second message from the mobility controller to the session transfer controller subscribing the mobility controller to status updates originated by the session transfer controller, said status updates relating to a status of a call to or from the user equipment, receiving one of said status updates at the mobility controller originated by the session transfer controller, dependent on a communication via the first radio access network from the user equipment to the session transfer controller of a change in the status of said call, and in response to receipt of said status update, updating a call status indicator of the mobility controller.
