The apparatus is constituted so that the grounding point of contact 83 is brought into contact with the electrical point of contact 82 when the cover 65 is closed and the electrical point of contact 82 is separated when the cover 65 is opened.       SOLUTION: The reference pattern toner image 1 formed on the intermediate transfer belt is provided with a triangular load reduction part 3 at a tip 1a on the approach side to the cleaning device 17 so that load which the cleaning device 17 receives at the time of cleaning becomes minimum and the load increases gradually in accordance with movement of the intermediate transfer belt in the direction of the arrow A. When a cleaning blade 17a comes in contact with the tip of the reference pattern toner image 1 and starts cleaning, the minimum load is first put on the cleaning device 17 and the load increases gradually in accordance with movement of the intermediate transfer belt in the direction of the arrow A, accordingly a rapid load variation can be prevented.
