    • A scanning or positioning system with at least two degrees of freedom is provided comprising a supporting base equipped with magnets, a movable platform equipped with at least two electrical coils, and suspension elements providing an elastic connection between the movable platform and the supporting base. The electrical coils are positioned flat on the movable platform, thereby forming an essentially flat arrangement with the movable platform. Combining the flat arrangement with the flat supporting base yields a scanning or positioning system which is potentially compact, lightweight and flat and which features fast response, low power consumption and a relatively large range of motion, e.g. up to 10 mm. The scanning or positioning system with at least two degrees of freedom can be used in the field of scanning probe microscopy or in the field of data storage or imaging.

    • Method for operating a storage device with a tape and a head wherein the head comprises a first and a second read element. Each read element is operable to detect servo-pattern of a particular servo band. The first and the second read element are arranged such that the tape at first passes one of both read elements and subsequently passes the other of both read elements when the tape moves in a predetermined longitudinal direction. A tape transport direction of the tape along the longitudinal direction is determined. The first read element is selected dependent on the determined tape transport direction, when the determined tape transport direction represents a direction where the tape at first passes the first read element and subsequently the second read element. Otherwise the second read element is selected. A position error signal is determined dependent on the selected read element.

    • Provides surface treatment devices, surface scanning devices, methods of operating a surface treatment device and methods of operating a surface scanning device. An area within a medium comprises at least one sharpening location for sharpening a tip of a probe mechanically. The tip is conically shaped with a radius of an apex smaller than 100 nm. In the case of the surface treatment device the probe is designed for altering the surface of the medium. In the case of the surface scanning device the probe is designed for scanning the medium. The sharpening location is suited for sharpening the tip mechanically. For that purpose the probe and the medium are being moved relative to each other such that the tip is located in the sharpening location. Then the probe and/or the medium are moved relative to each other such, that the tip is mechanically sharpened.
