    • Methods and apparatuses for delivery of biologically active material and/or sensors to a target organ or system. The apparatuses allow for specific, controlled delivery of the biologically active material and targeted placement of sensors. The apparatuses may be fabricated from cellular and/or acellular biological active components to promote integration of sensors into tissue and achieve appropriate release of biologically active molecules. The apparatuses may be fabricated from plasma-containing materials or other biopolymers such that the apparatus will resorbed into the tissue following insertion. The biologically active cellular or acellular component may be incorporated into that material may then serve as the source of the therapeutic biologically active component. The apparatus may take the form of a screw, though numerous shapes arc contemplated. The delivery methods and apparatuses of the present invention may be employed in a wide variety of physiological and medical situations, with cardiac implementations being particularly appropriate.

    • A method for forming a sprayed metal die comprising the steps of first building a positive pattern of the die. Then, there is the step of spraying a first metal, having a first melting temperature, onto the pattern to form a first metal substrate. Next, there is the step of separating the pattern from the first metal substrate. Next, there is the step of spraying a second metal, having a second melting temperature higher than the first melting temperature, onto the first metal substrate to form a second metal substrate which bonds to the first metal substrate to resist shrinkage due to residual stress within the second metal substrate. Next, there is the step of heating the first and second substrates to a temperature higher than the first melting temperature, yet lower than the second melting temperature, to melt away the first metal substrate from the second metal substrate.

    • A light weight servo controlled robot gripper is disclosed. A plastic body houses one or more threaded drive shafts which are powered by a direct current motor. Attached to the shafts are finger mounting blocks which support removable fingers and which can be driven both closer to and further away from a fixed point by the motor. Integral with at least one mounting block is a force transducer which monitors the load exerted on the finger through a pivot and lever action of a mounting bracket provided adjacent to the load cell. Since the transducer is in the block rather than the fingertip, fingers are readily interchangable without reinstrumentation. A limit switch, located above one of the finger mounting blocks, is used to determine coarse finger position, and an optical shaft encoder provides precise position information allowing the gripper to be utilized for a variety of position as well as force servoing tasks.

    • A system for linking a first member with a second member. The system is comprised of a first plurality of micromechanical barbs disposed on the first member. The system is also comprised of a second plurality of micromechanical barbs disposed on the second member. The barbs on the first member and the second member are of a shape such that a locking connection is formed between the first member and second member through the first plurality and second plurality of barbs when placed together. Each of the barbs of the first plurality and second plurality of barbs extend from the first member and second member, respectively, to a height no greater than 5 millimeters. The present invention also pertains to a micromechanical barb for linking with an object. The micrormechanical barb comprises a base. The micromechanical barb is also comprised of a support which extends from the base. The micromechanical barb additionally is comprised of a head which is disposed upon the support and which mates with the object such that a locking connection is found therebetween. The length of the support and the head is less than 5 millimeters.
